We are looking for reliable, hardworking, and community-focused individuals to join our waste management team as Refuse and Recycling Collectors. This is an important frontline role that helps keep our communities clean, safe, and environmentally responsible.

Working as part of a supportive crew, you will collect household waste and recycling materials while delivering a high standard of service to residents.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect household waste, recycling, and other designated materials safely and efficiently.
  • Work as part of a team to complete daily collection routes.
  • Handle bins, containers, and waste materials in accordance with health and safety procedures.
  • Assist drivers and crew members during collections.
  • Maintain a high standard of customer service when interacting with residents.
  • Report issues, hazards, contamination, or missed collections as required.
  • Ensure safe working practices are followed at all times.

Hours of work are a 4-day week, working 37hrs per week, Tuesday - Friday Starting at 06:45 to 16:30 there may be some flexibility needed working on the 5-day working week Monday to Friday staring times are 06:45 to 14:45 Monday to Thursday and 06:45 to 14:15 on a Friday. We also offer overtime working on Mondays, Saturdays and Sundays when needed on a rotational basis.

Role and Purpose

To provide a regular and efficient refuse and recyclables service to the residents of including domestic and trade waste. To collect and remove waste, as per the daily schedule, and contribute to the completion of the output target of the crew. To provide statutory refuse service to public and trade customers contributing to the Council’s statutory recycling targets and departmental objectives.


Principal Accountabilities:

  1. To collect empty and return a range of heavy wheeled bin containers from various locations, including domestic and trade properties in all weather conditions. An output target of approximately 1,500 collections per crew per day resulting in the collection of approximately 20 tonnes per day. To complete daily work schedules and collect additional waste during holiday periods to ensure full service delivery.
  2. To operate a range of manual, semi automatic and automatic bin lifting equipment. Ensuring correct alignment, placement and removal of heavy containers from bin lifting equipment. The operation of all safety features including safety stop buttons in accordance with safe working procedures to prevent damage, spillage and injury. Ensuring public safety and preventing any public contact with equipment.
  3. Assist in the safe upkeep of the vehicle including daily & weekly maintenance checks and recording vehicle checks, defects, mileage and driving hours etc. as required, ensuring all loads are legal and sign as a true record. Reporting suspected urgent vehicle faults to Driver/Charge hand and wait with vehicle for breakdown assistance.
  4. Provide advice and assistance to groups who request help with removal of the refuse. To enter and exit individually agreed properties removing refuse from and communicating with the elderly, disabled, vulnerable and trade (use of keys/swipe cards) customers, which equates to 6% of all waste collection services.
  5. Provide information and advice to customers on all Waste Management issues including bin presentation, overloaded bins, damaged bins and access to other services i.e. bulky items and recycling. To respond to customer enquiries, including instances of confrontation, in a polite and courteous manner at all times. To be responsible for informing the public through leaflets, stickers or letters regarding any changes to service delivery, including holiday arrangements which can effect up to 7,500 properties, to maximise public awareness.
  6. Operating and be fully responsible for the use of the mobile/hand held or in-cab technology, to interact, communicate, report any fault, complaint and to respond to both customers and call centre staff, to liaise with the Call Centre for non-presented bins, heavy bins or bins that have raised lids in accordance with the policies of the Council. Identifying problems/issues that need reporting to the call centre via hand held technology or to a line manager via mobile telephone.
  7. Make operational decisions on areas of collection, damaged bins (reporting and arranging delivery of new or repair of existing and remove damaged bin if necessary), heavy bins (which may damage bin lifting equipment and may result in being consumed by vehicle) and appropriate bin presentation to ensure safe collection, informing customer of any problems, and identifying any faults with equipment. To enter premises to carryout varied collections gaining entry be use of keys, swipe cards etc.
  8. To report to the driver/chargehand any problems affecting crew performance or service delivery that may prevent service provision including instances of customer confrontation that cannot be resolved.
  9. Collection of data through the use of electronic handheld barcode scanners to enable accurate monitoring of waste and recycling participation rates.
  10. Undertake all the duties of a recycling, blue bin, garden/kitchen waste, clinical waste collections, and collector as required including manually handling.
  11. The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and associated legislation places responsibilities for health and safety on Hull City Council, as your employer and you as an employee of the council. In addition to the Councils overall duties, the post holder has personal responsibility for their own health & safety and that of other employees; additional and more specific responsibilities are identified in the Council’s Corporate H&S policy. It is important that all operatives themselves available for Health and Safety Training and any training specific to their role.
  12. Undertake any training required to ensure that all aspects of the duties are undertaken competently. To undertake NVQ level 2 qualification within 18 months of being successful in post.
