About the role...
We are looking to appoint a Regional Director for our Liveable Places Northern England & Scotland region. The role can be based from either our Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester or Newcastle offices - with flexible working allowing for a mix of home and in-office working.
The Liveable Places Discipline forms part of WSP's Local Government business, sitting alongside the Local Government Core Contracts who have a total of fifteen core clients. The Core Contracts concentrate on providing locally based teams to deliver alongside reaching back into the wider WSP business for additional support as required. The Liveable Places Discipline is the consultancy arm of WSP's Local Government business and provides place-based design to predominantly local authority clients across the country, including the Core Contracts.
The Regional Director has overall accountability for the performance of the Liveable Places business within their region. They are responsible for leadership of client engagement, people management, and project and business performance in their region. They report to the Head of Liveable Places.
The role of a Regional Director is to embed a strong client and people culture around delivering technically excellent solutions to our clients, balanced with the need to satisfy our commercial expectations. The successful delivery of our growth plans relies on collaboration across the Local Government business and wider WSP, and the Regional Director is expected to build positive local relationships to enable this collaboration.

Role Expectations...
- Build a culture within the region, aligned to our WSP values, through effective cross-business working with transparent and open communication
- Enhance the Team’s sense of belonging and facilitate ongoing improvement in WSP Listens scores
- Visible and exemplary Health, Safety and Wellbeing leadership, including the completion of at least one formal health and safety focused leadership engagement activity per month
- Manage and oversee all aspects associated with Quality / Health & Safety / Environment within region
- Undertake Key Client Lead or Sponsor role as appropriate, alongside leading your Regional Growth Plans, supported by the Liveable Places Growth Director - North
- Fulfil the Project Director / Manager role for projects within the Liveable Places Discipline
- Ensure best practice relating to project leadership (technical and commercial), including project reviews
- Support the Liveable Places Senior Operations Lead - National on operational matters, notably in relation to meeting or exceeding budget targets
- Increase use of our teams in India through the wider integration of the team and sponsoring initiatives to enhance right-first-time delivery
- Support the Liveable Places Senior Operations Lead - National to ensure an effective organisational structure in the region, including succession planning
- Support the Liveable Places Senior Operations Lead - National with recruitment needs to meet client, project, and budget targets / demands
- Support the Liveable Places Team Leader – National with the effective implementation of commercial risk management controls, governance, reviews (bid, contract, project, business, etc.), guidance and direction
- Fulfil the Bid Director / Bid Manager role for opportunities within the Liveable Places Discipline
- Provide support to the Strategic Pursuits Team when bidding for contracts within region
- Support the Liveable Places Growth Director - North with effective go / no-go decisions and improving the quality of our tender submissions with the aim of achieving a success rate of at least 65%
- Build positive relationships across the Local Government Business and wider WSP to ensure successful multi-disciplinary collaboration
- Provide co-ordination across the Local Government Business to ensure sharing of best practice and innovation
- Lead and support Office Leads for extraordinary performance issues
- Interface with HR on all general related staff matters

- Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and management skills
- Experience of working in a matrix-managed organisation
- Strong stakeholder management and relationship-building skills
- Broad project experience in the Local Government sector
- Proven experience of managing significant client accounts with public and local authority clients
- Significant knowledge and experience of delivering multi-disciplinary schemes across the project lifecycle with the proven ability to act as Project Director
- Excellent communication and knowledge-sharing abilities
- Strong critical thinking skills and logical reasoning
