Location: Home-based or hybrid working, with regular travel within your region and attendance at monthly management meetings in Ashton Gate.
Reporting to: Head of Interviewer Operations
Team: Lead Field Performance Managers and support a large interviewer workforce across your region
We're looking for three Regional Field Managers to lead high-performing teams across NatCen's interviewer workforce. Reporting to the Head of Interviewer Operations, you'll be responsible for regional delivery, ensuring fieldwork is completed to the highest standards of quality, productivity, and performance.
This is a significant leadership role, leading Field Performance Managers and supporting a large interviewer workforce across your region. You'll use workforce planning, performance management, and operational insight to ensure your region has the capability and capacity to deliver against demanding targets, while driving continuous improvement and colleague engagement.
We're looking for experienced operational leaders who have successfully managed geographically dispersed teams through others, can use data to drive performance, and are passionate about developing people and delivering results. Experience in survey operations or other field-based operational environments would be advantageous.
This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of interviewer operations at NatCen and play a key role in delivering some of the UK's most important social research studies.
What you'll do
- Lead regional operations - oversee the organisation and delivery of fieldwork across your region, ensuring quality, productivity, response rate, timetable, and financial targets are achieved.
- Build high-performing teams - lead and develop Field Performance Managers, creating a culture of accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement.
- Drive performance through insight - use management information, workforce planning, and operational data to identify opportunities, manage risks, and improve outcomes.
- Ensure workforce capability and capacity - plan regional resource deployment and recruitment activity to ensure delivery requirements are met now and in the future.
- Lead through others - provide coaching, mentoring, and performance management to first-line managers, helping them deliver excellent results through their teams.
- Strengthen regional delivery - take ownership of regional KPIs, implementing corrective action where quality, productivity, capacity, or engagement indicators fall below expectation.
- Collaborate across NatCen - work closely with stakeholders across Data Collection and the wider organisation to support operational excellence and service improvement.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
