I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Experience fit
Your summer at the bank plus your econometrics coursework map directly to the day-one responsibilities on this scheme — client modelling, market briefings, and deal support.
Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
- Directly managing and mentoring local entity accountants
- Standardising closing cadences across jurisdictions
- Providing financial leadership across the region
- Roll out of NetSuite across the entities as part of global ERP transformation
- Acting as the strategic conduit between transatlantic operations and the Global HQ executive team
This role requires a unique blend of hands-on controllership authority (driving local close integrity, local GAAP compliance, and cash control across multiple entities) and commercial FP&A capability (variance narratives, and regional rolling forecasts).
About The Candidate
We're not wedded to industry / sector specific candidates in this search.

Get help with your application
Your very own career expert that helps elevate your application to the next level.
While a freight forwarding / logistics / distribution background will help, certainly across an international scale, it is not essential.
We're open to the right candidate making a move directly from a mid-to-large accountancy practice, but this will be dependent on your direct experiences, client base and overall communication & stakeholder management exposure during that time.
An ACA / ACCA / ICAEW trained accountant with a few years PQE in industry will likely have the most rounded skill set and ability required to make an immediate impact in this role.
To note again, you will be required to be on-site in Newmarket 5 days. There is the view for this to lighten as you become settled into the role.
