The Role
The Regional Organiser is the key organising role in our region, building UNISON’s collective strength by:
- Providing leadership to a group of branches within a locality, service group or work area to establish and maintain strong UNISON organisation at workplace and employer level.
- Supporting, guiding and developing branches and activists through major periods of change in the delivery of public services and to the terms and conditions of employment of their members.
- Ensuring branches recruit and retain members and develop new activists, identifying training and development needs and providing ongoing support through coaching and mentoring of stewards and branch officers.
- Building branch organisation and performance and supporting branches to meet the requirements of union processes and rules and participate in the union’s wider structures.
- Leading and supporting collective negotiations affecting your branches or service group, in line with the union’s established policy and bargaining positions.
- Representing members individually and collectively and assisting branches to develop systems and processes for managing and undertaking their casework effectively.
- Managing a small team of area and/or local organisers or team support workers.
- Supporting the work of the region’s democratic structures as required (e.g. by supporting a Regional Committee).

The Person

In addition to experience in an industrial relations environment, you will have:
- Demonstrable leadership and motivational skills including success in encouraging participation of others in collective activities.
- A track record of using initiative and independence over a broad area of activity.
- Considerable knowledge of employment law and a track record of high-level negotiation and representation.
- Experience of advocacy in difficult situations.
- Ability to develop strategies, plans and solutions to solve complex problems.
- Ability to develop and manage projects and competing demands.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills and experience of influencing people at all levels.
Regional Organiser posts are generic, and the postholder may be deployed to any team or location across the region in response to operational needs. The initial assignment for this fixed-term post will be to our Health Service Group team.
