Role Description

The Regional Research Governance Lead is a full-time, hybrid role based in Stoke-on-Trent, with the ability to work from home for agreed parts of the week. This role leads and coordinates governance processes for research activities across the region, ensuring compliance with national regulations, local policies, and ethical standards. Day-to-day responsibilities include reviewing and approving research proposals, overseeing study set-up and monitoring, and providing expert advice to investigators, clinicians, and research teams. The postholder will develop and implement governance frameworks, maintain audit and reporting systems, and manage risk registers related to research activity. The role also involves building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, delivering training on research governance requirements, and contributing to continuous improvement in research quality and safety.

  • Demonstrated expertise in research governance, including ethics, regulatory compliance, and risk management within healthcare or academic settings.
  • Strong skills in policy development, process improvement, and implementation of governance frameworks across multiple teams or organisations.
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex regulations and guidance.
  • Effective communication, stakeholder engagement, and relationship-building capabilities, including experience influencing senior colleagues and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proven skills in project and program management, including planning, prioritising, and delivering to deadlines in a busy environment.
  • Competence in using digital tools and data systems to track research activity, produce reports, and support decision-making.
  • Relevant degree in a health, science, or research-related discipline, or equivalent experience; postgraduate training in research, governance, or healthcare management is desirable.
  • Experience working within the NHS or a comparable healthcare system, particularly in research, clinical trials, or academic collaboration, is an advantage.
  • Commitment to inclusive practice, continuous professional development, and promoting high standards of research integrity and patient safety.
