Registered Building Inspector (Class 2D / 2F) – 6-Month Contract
Location: Shropshire Council (Hybrid Working)
Rate: £50.00 per hour (Umbrella)
Contract: 6-Month Contract
Hours: 37 Hours Per Week
Working Pattern: Hybrid – Home Working Available with Site Attendance Required
Pay: Bi-weekly
DBS: Basic DBS Required
Summary
Shropshire Council is on the lookout for seasoned Registered Building Inspectors to join its esteemed Building Control team. We are particularly interested in professionals registered at Class 2D or Class 2F levels who are adept at plan checking, plan assessment, and conducting site inspections. The role encompasses a diverse range of projects, including domestic, commercial, and complex structures. While the position offers the flexibility of home working, candidates must be prepared to attend site inspections as needed, typically around 8:30 am and 2:00 pm, with site visits varying according to workload.
Responsibilities
Plan Checking & Compliance
- Evaluate Building Regulation applications for adherence to:
- Building Regulations
- Associated legislation
- Approved Documents
- Relevant British Standards
- Conduct thorough plan checks and technical evaluations.
- Engage in consultations with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Communicate with applicants, architects, contractors, and developers.
- Deliver decisions within statutory deadlines.
Site Inspections
- Perform site inspections to verify compliance with Building Regulations.
- Inspect a range of projects, including:
- Domestic developments
- Commercial buildings
- Complex construction projects
- Maintain comprehensive site records and inspection reports.
- Identify non-compliance issues and propose practical solutions.
- Assist with enforcement activities as necessary.

Building Control Enforcement
- Support enforcement under:
- Building Act 1984
- Building Regulations
- Dangerous Structures legislation
- Demolition procedures
- Aid in investigations and regulatory actions as needed.
- Prepare evidence and offer professional insights for legal proceedings if required.
Technical & Professional Duties
- Provide expert technical guidance to customers and stakeholders.
- Address customer inquiries, complaints, and member questions.
- Contribute to continuous service improvement and performance objectives.
- Uphold professional registration and CPD requirements.
- Mentor and support junior colleagues when appropriate.
Essential Requirements
- Registered Building Inspector status with the Building Safety Regulator.
- Registration at Class 2D or Class 2F level.
- Degree in a building-related field.
- Full membership of:
- MRICS, and/or
- MCABE, and/or
- MCIOB
- In-depth knowledge of:
- Building Regulations
- Approved Documents
- Building Act 1984
- Building Control legislation
- Experience in:
- Plan checking
- Plan assessments
- Site inspections
- Building Control enforcement
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient IT skills and experience with Building Control systems.
- Ability to manage workload and meet statutory deadlines efficiently.

Desirable
- At least 5 years of Building Control experience.
- Experience as a Senior Building Control or Registered Building Inspector.
- Experience in a Local Authority Building Control setting.
- Experience in supporting change and service improvement initiatives.
- Experience in commercial Building Control operations.
Special
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Capability to travel throughout Shropshire.
- Ability to conduct site inspections independently.

- Excavations
- Confined spaces
- Dangerous structures
- Lone-working environments
