About the home

Crabbe Farm is a newly renovated three bed children's home in Harlow, Essex, part of the Young Care Hub group. The building has been refurbished from top to bottom specifically for this purpose, and it is a genuinely lovely environment: warm, well finished and designed around the young people who will live there rather than around a floor plan.

The home will care for young people with high levels of risk and complexity, including those subject to deprivation of liberty orders. Staffing ratios are set accordingly, occupancy is deliberately low, and the model is intensive, relational and clinically informed. Our group has a CAMHS clinical background, and that shapes how we understand behaviour and how we support both young people and staff.

The opportunity, and an honest word about timing

This is a new home working towards Ofsted registration. We are pursuing a priority registration application, and the person we appoint will be central to it: preparing the Statement of Purpose, the policy suite and the evidence file, being the named manager on the SC2, and sitting the fit person interview.

Registration timescales are outside anyone's control, so we are being straightforward about what the first months look like. Until Crabbe Farm is registered and able to operate, you will work as an interim Deputy Manager at our established home in Hemel Hempstead. It means you are earning from day one, you are learning how we work, you are building the recent, evidenced residential leadership experience Ofsted looks for, and you arrive at Crabbe Farm already part of the group rather than a stranger to it.

We would prefer someone who is open to identifying and supporting a young person during the registration process if an LA identifies a specific child and OFSTED approve it.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What you will be responsible for

Once registered:

  • Day to day leadership of the home and full accountability for the quality of care
  • Compliance with the Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the Quality Standards, and with the home's Statement of Purpose
  • Safeguarding: leading practice, managing allegations and incidents, and working with the LADO, police, health and placing authorities
  • Recruiting, inducting, supervising and developing the staff team, including safer recruitment throughout
  • Care planning, risk assessment and outcome tracking for each young person, with particular attention to young people subject to DoL orders and the reporting the court and the local authority require
  • Managing staffing ratios, budgets and the physical environment
  • Building and holding the relationships that keep the home full and well regarded: commissioners, social workers, IROs, education, health and the Ofsted inspector
  • Preparing for and leading through inspection, and driving the home towards Good and then Outstanding

In the interim period, as Deputy Manager at Hemel Hempstead:

  • Supporting the Registered Manager in all of the above
  • Taking delegated responsibility for shifts, supervision and specific areas of compliance
  • Contributing to the Crabbe Farm registration work alongside the deputy role

What we are looking for

Essential:

  • Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare, or equivalent, held or close to completion
  • Substantial experience in children's residential care, including a solid track record at Deputy Manager level or above
  • Sound working knowledge of the Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015, the Quality Standards and the Ofsted inspection framework
  • Demonstrable experience supporting young people with high risk presentations: self harm, absconding, exploitation, aggression, placement breakdown
  • Confidence in multi agency work, including with courts, commissioners and clinical colleagues
  • Someone who wants to open a home and shape it, rather than step into a settled one
  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
  • Enhanced DBS on the update service, or willingness to obtain one

Desirable:

  • Previous experience of Ofsted registration, whether as the registered manager or supporting an application
  • Experience of DoL placements and the reporting they carry
  • Experience of therapeutic or trauma informed models of care

We would also consider a strong, ambitious Deputy Manager ready to step up into their first registered post, provided the qualification and experience base is there.

What we offer

  • £60,000 to £65,000 basic salary, depending on experience
  • A brand new, beautifully renovated home to open and make your own
  • Low occupancy and high staffing ratios, so the model is deliverable rather than aspirational
  • Clinical backing from a group with genuine CAMHS heritage
  • Direct access to the Responsible Individual and the Director, with decisions made quickly
  • Funded training and development, including support to complete Level 5 if you are working towards it
