Job Overview

Oak Tree Ward in Hillingdon, part of CNWL, is looking for compassionate and enthusiastic Band 5 RMN to work on their Older Adults Mental Health In-patient ward based at The Woodland Centre. They offer excellent learning opportunities and further development in both physical and mental health conditions.

  • They were shortlisted for the 'coveted Nursing Times Team of the Year award in 2021'.
  • They care for older persons with enduring mental health conditions and long-term physical health conditions.
  • Their dynamic MDT comprises Medical Doctors, Nurses, OT's, Psychologists, Wellbeing support officers, and collaboration with outside Agencies.
  • They are currently leading on several quality improvement projects to promote safety and better experiences for patients.
  • They have been certified in 'QNOAMHS: Quality Network for Older Adults Mental Health Services' and are currently recertifying this year.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Work as an advocate for service users, speaking up for their care, offering dignity and respect, and encouraging them to be a part of decision-making and maintain independence.
  • Have excellent communication skills and the ability to use IT skills, as their medication administration regime is now via computer software and service user documentation is computerized.
  • Stay up-to-date on mandatory trainings and revalidation.
  • Safeguard knowledge.
  • Be willing to work as part of the team on quality improvement projects.
  • Medication Management skills.
  • Use clinical judgment and risk assessments to keep service users as safe as possible.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

  • Safeguarding people by recognizing and responding when an adult or child might be at risk from abuse, recognizing their own limits, asking for help, and escalating concerns when necessary.
  • Escalating safety concerns and acting as effective advocates for those who use their services.
  • Being open and transparent about their own practice.
  • Supervising the work of others.
  • Reflecting on everyday practice to identify areas where improvements in safety or quality can be made.
  • Working with others to create a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Maintaining accurate, legible, comprehensive records.
  • Maintaining compliance with their mandatory training requirements.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • NMC Registered General Nurse, NMC Registered Mental Health Nurse, or NMC registered dual trained nurse.
  • Numeracy skills required for the safe administration of medicines.

Desirable criteria

  • NMC registered for both General nursing or Mental health nursing in the UK.
  • Evidence of relevant Continuous Professional Development.

Previous Experience

Essential criteria

  • You need previous experience of working in NHS hospital as either General Nurse or Mental Health Nurse.

  • Experience working in Older Adult Mental Health care in the UK.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Able to communicate with the multi-disciplinary team, present cases, take note of actions, update others in the team, and use handover effectively. Speaking face to face, by telephone, and writing letters and reports.
  • Maintaining accurate, timely, concise, and legible clinical records both electronic and handwritten which adhere to the CNWL policies.
  • Able to talk to people about sensitive issues in a supportive manner but also challenge others assertively where necessary.
  • Able to maintain electronic patient records.
  • Use Microsoft Word for letter and report writing.
  • Proficient in Care planning: being able to assess patients, develop, implement, and evaluate a care plan.
  • Understanding how the Mental Health Act impacts on their work and the people they are working with.
  • Understanding how the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards impact on their work and the people they are working with.
  • Empowering and working in partnership.
  • Safeguarding and advocacy.
  • Risk assessment.
