Job Overview
Oak Tree Ward in Hillingdon Part of CNWL is looking for compassionate and enthusiastic Band 5 RMN to work on our Older Adults Mental Health In-patient ward based at The Woodland Centre. We can boast excellent learning opportunities and further development both in physical and mental health conditions.
We were also shortlisted for the 'coveted Nursing Times Team of the Year award in 2021'.
We care for older persons with enduring mental health conditions, long-term physical health conditions. Our dynamic MDT comprises of Medical Doctor; Nurses; OT's; Psychologies; Wellbeing support officers and collaboration with outside Agencies. This provides optimum opportunities for both newly qualified and experience RMN's with interest in older adult mental health services.
Our Trust values and quality improvement work is at the heart of the care we provide. We are currently leading on several quality improvement projects, to promote safety and better experiences for our patients. You can be part of this initiative.
We have also been certified in 'QNOAMHS: "Quality Network for Older Adults Mental Health Services'" currently recertifying this year.
Main duties of the job
- Work as an advocate for our service users speaking up for their care, offering dignity and respect, also encouraging our services users to be a part of decision making and maintain independence.
- Have excellent communication skills and ability to use IT skills. As our medication administration regime is now via computer software and also service user documentation is computerized.
- Stay up-to-date on mandatory trainings and revalidation.
- Safeguarding knowledge.
- Be willingly to work as part of the team on quality improvement projects.
- Medication Management skills.
- Using their clinical judgement and risk assessments to keep the people using our services as safe as possible.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
- Safeguarding people by recognising and responding when an adult or child might be at risk from abuse but also recognising their own limits and asking for help and escalate concerns when necessary.
- Escalating safety concerns and by doing so acting as effective advocates for those who use our services.
- Being open and transparent about their own practice.
- Supervising the work of others.
- Reflecting on everyday practice to identify areas where improvements in safety or quality can be made.
- Working with others to create a culture of continuous improvement.
- Maintaining accurate, legible, comprehensive records.
- Maintaining compliance with their mandatory training requirements.
Person specification
Education And Qualifications
Essential criteria
- NMC Registered General nurse, NMC Registered Mental Health Nurse or NMC registered dual trained nurse.
- Numeracy skills required for the safe administration of medicines.
Desirable criteria
- NMC registered for both General nursing or Mental health nursing in the UK.
- Evidence of relevant Continuous Professional Development.

- You need previous experience of working in NHS hospital as either General nurse or Mental Health Nurse.
Desirable criteria
- Experience working in Older Adult Mental Health care in the UK.
Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Able to communicate with the multi-disciplinary team, present cases, take note of actions, update others in the team and use handover effectively. Speaking face to face but also by telephone and writing letters and reports.
- Maintaining accurate, timely, concise and legible clinical records both electronic and handwritten which adhere to the CNWL policies.
- Able to talk to people about sensitive issues in a supportive manner but also challenge others assertively where necessary.
- Able to maintain electronic patient records.
- Use Microsoft Word for letter and report writing.
- Proficient in Care planning: being able to assess patients, develop, implement and evaluate a care plan.
- Understanding how the Mental Health Act impacts on their work and the people they are working with.
- Understanding how the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards impacts on their work and the people they are working with.
