How You'll Make a Difference
As a Registration Officer, you will play a vital role in supporting people through some of life's most important milestones, delivering essential registration services for births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships across South Gloucestershire. You will provide a professional, sensitive and customer-focused service, ensuring that every interaction is handled with care, accuracy and respect.
Acting as Deputy to the Superintendent Registrar and County Registrar, you will play a key role in shaping and delivering an exceptional Registration Service. You will take the lead on a variety of rewarding responsibilities, including coordinating and managing ceremony bookings, overseeing the registration process and providing expert advice and guidance to members of the public at significant moments in their lives.
What You Will Be Doing
- Providing a range of statutory and non-statutory registration services using national registration services such as RON and DRS, you will ensure information is recorded accurately while identifying and investigating any discrepancies or anomalies.
- Delivering a high-quality, customer-focused service will be central to your role. Whether supporting customers in person, by telephone or email, you will provide professional advice and guidance on all aspects of registration services.
- You will conduct and register marriage and civil partnership ceremonies, with training provided where required.
- Working closely with a range of stakeholders, government bodies and local authorities, you will maintain high standards of service delivery while undertaking a variety of administrative responsibilities. These will include producing historical certificates, managing appointment systems, processing payments, maintaining accurate records and balancing daily accounts.
- A key aspect of your role will be scrutinising documentation to ensure compliance with legislation, regulations and codes of practice, including safeguarding against sham or forced marriages.
- You will support colleagues, contribute to effective teamwork and assist the Registration Service Manager and Superintendent Registrar in daily operations and service innovation.

What We Need From You
- It is essential that you have proven experience in a customer-facing role, ideally within a registration, legal or public service environment, where you have interpreted and applied legislation, processes and guidance to ensure compliance with statutory requirements.
- You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide clear, professional advice and support to a wide range of customers. Alongside this, you must have a high level of accuracy, strong attention to detail and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
- A strong team player, you will have strong organisational and administrative skills, with the ability to prioritise competing demands, manage your workload effectively and work within established procedures and regulations. Experience of using IT systems, maintaining accurate records and undertaking data entry is essential.
- If you have the skills and experience we are looking for but do not have a background in registration services, full training and support will be provided by our experienced and supportive team.
- Ideally, you will hold an NVQ Level 3 in Business and Administration.
What You Need To Know
- You will be based at Kingswood Civic Centre, but will also be required to work at Yate One Stop Shop, and as needed, will travel throughout the authority and surrounding area to conduct registrations or ceremonies.
- There will be opportunities to work additional hours on weekends, on a rota basis, to conduct a variety of ceremonies, where additional payments will be made for these duties.
- You will be required to have a DBS certificate, and we will support if you require a new DBS application as part of your onboarding checks.
