About the role
Sellafield Ltd requires specialist legal advice to support the successful delivery of its mission and this role will support our Legal team’s delivery of high value regulatory law support to an evolving business in a complex environment.
As a highly regulated organisation, a legal advisor within the Regulatory Law team advises the business across a range of matters including health and safety, environment, security and transport from regulatory interpretation through to assisting significant projects and dealing with enforcement. You will be responsible for the delivery of high-quality legal advice in relation to regulatory law matters for Sellafield, supporting the delivery of strategic business objectives with the opportunity to work with the wider NDA group legal teams.
The role will encompass diverse regulatory matters, including contentious and non-contentious work. Following an initial period gaining knowledge of the business environment under the direction of the other regulatory solicitors, you will be responsible for your own matters and will work as part of the wider Sellafield legal team. You will report to the Head of Regulatory Law and ultimately the General Counsel.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver high quality and timely legal advice and support to the business in relation to regulatory law matters.
- Undertake legal risk analysis in connection with contentious and non-contentious regulatory law activities to maintain consistent, compliant and enabling positions in support of the SL Enterprise Strategy, Operating Plan, Board Risk Appetite statement, as well as external factors relating to government policy and strategy.
- Identify emerging regulatory legal issues and trends.
- Drive the objectives of the business as well as promoting its standards and manifesto.
- Assist in the ongoing maintenance of the regulatory legal team plan to match and anticipate future demands from the business and to enable the business to respond efficiently and effectively to changes in the regulatory environment.
- Develop relevant internal and external (including the NDA Group) stakeholder relationships in support of the corporate strategy and operating plan imperatives.
- Represent Sellafield in discussions with key stakeholders as required including, but not limited to, the NDA, ONR, EA, HSE and Natural England.
- Manage the instruction and funding of external legal advice for regulatory law work, ensuring effective engagement, value for money and efficient cost management.
- Deliver front line advice in own regulatory law practice area specialisms.
- Work closely with NDA legal and other NDA group legal teams in relation to matters of common interest, developing and strengthening relationships to promote two-way engagement.
- Brief, as required the General Counsel/ Head of Regulatory Law, Executive or Board on regulatory law matters or other updates.
- Provision of updates for any NDA or internal reporting obligations or to ensure collaborative cross-group working within Legal Services.
- Horizon scanning for legal updates and changes, including on policy development, legislation, and case law.
- Deliver training and development of standard documents and protocols.
- Support the “learning from experience” feedback loop to inform good practice and efficiency of the team or wider business.
- Compliance with obligations of the relevant legal regulatory body including ongoing professional development.

Your Skills and Qualifications
We are ideally seeking a qualified Solicitor with over 3 years’ experience with a good foundation in health and safety and / or environmental law and an appetite for developing into wider regulatory law areas.
- The ability to assimilate information and make informed recommendations, often in limited timescales.
- Practical problem-solving ability.
- Ability to deal with a wide range of people across the business and to apply good client relationship management.
- Desire to be business-focussed and demonstrate a clear enthusiasm and passion for the business and your role in it.
- Demonstrable ability to work with legal teams and advisors in highly regulated and high consequence environments.
- Ability to manage legal instructions to ensure that advice provided by external legal advisors reflects relevant Sellafield Ltd processes.

Skills considered desirable…
- Prior experience of working in-house and / or advising within the nuclear sector or other similarly highly regulated sectors.
