Job Description

Purpose of the Role

To identify and seize business opportunities, expand the customer base, manage existing and new relationships, drive revenue growth, and establish and nurture profitable partnerships with corporate clients. This role serves as the bridge between the bank's offerings and clients' needs, ensuring mutual benefit and long-term success.

Accountabilities

  • Conduct market research and analysis to identify new opportunities, market trends, and customer needs, and develop strategies for business growth.
  • Identify leads through networking, referrals, cold calling, and attending industry events.
  • Develop and execute strategies to acquire new business and expand the customer base, including preparing proposals, presentations, and negotiating contracts.
  • Collaborate with relationship teams, product managers, credit analysts, operations, and other internal stakeholders to ensure seamless delivery of banking products and services to clients.
  • Manage client relationships to understand their financial goals, challenges, and risk tolerance, and analyze data to identify trends, insights, and areas for improvement.
  • Research and understand the client's industry trends, regulatory landscape, and competitive environment to inform strategic recommendations.
  • Design customized solutions that address the client's specific needs and objectives, incorporating a range of products and services from the bank's portfolio.
  • Communicate the value proposition of proposed solutions, justify recommendations, and negotiate terms beneficial for both the client and the bank.

Role Overview

Join Barclays as a Relationship Development Director within our Mid-Corporate team based in Cardiff.

In Mid Corporate Coverage, we partner with businesses to understand their objectives, opportunities, and challenges, helping them achieve their ambitions through tailored financial solutions and informed insight. Our clients operate across a wide range of sectors, including manufacturing, technology, professional services, and hospitality, and we work across Barclays to deliver the full breadth of our corporate banking capabilities.

As a Relationship Development Director, you will manage and grow a portfolio of Mid Corporate clients, building trusted relationships with key stakeholders and providing strategic support to help them achieve their long-term goals. You will identify opportunities to deepen client relationships, increase share of wallet, and deliver sustainable growth, while maintaining a focus on client outcomes, risk management, and regulatory compliance.

You will also contribute to the acquisition of new clients by developing a network across the South Wales business community and collaborating with product partners to deliver a seamless One Barclays proposition.

Success in this role requires commercial awareness, stakeholder management skills, and the ability to identify and deliver opportunities that support both client and Barclays growth objectives.

Key Requirements

To be successful as a Relationship Development Director, you will need:

  • Experience managing client relationships within a corporate banking or wider corporate business environment.
  • Business development and networking experience, including generating new client opportunities and building professional introducer relationships.
  • Communication skills, with the ability to influence and build credibility with a range of stakeholders.
  • Experience identifying new business opportunities and growing existing client relationships.
  • Knowledge of corporate banking products and services, including lending, cash management, liquidity, and treasury solutions.
  • Understanding of credit risk, lending principles, and corporate banking control frameworks.
  • Knowledge of KYC, financial crime, and regulatory requirements within a corporate banking environment.

Other Valuable Skills

  • Negotiation and influencing skills, with the ability to deliver positive client and business outcomes.
  • Knowledge of risk policies and procedures covering credit, regulatory, operational, and legal risk.
  • Experience collaborating across product, risk, and coverage teams to deliver integrated client solutions.
  • Understanding of the Mid Corporate market and the economic factors affecting clients at local, regional, and national levels.

This role will be based in Cardiff.
