Short Description
Help clients grow, manage wealth and achieve ambitions through trusted relationships
About the business area
Commercial Banking is our business-to-business offering, helping businesses of all sizes to grow - from small enterprises to large multinationals. We provide expert advice and essential services dependent on business needs. These could include trade finance, global payments, multi-currency accounts, commercial cards and insurance, alongside many others.
Who you are
You’re someone who enjoys building relationships, helping others and making an impact. You’re curious, proactive and comfortable working in a fast-moving, client-focused environment. You’ll need strong communication skills, attention to detail, teamwork, adaptability and the confidence to take ownership of tasks. An interest in analysing information and turning it into clear recommendations will help too, as you’ll support presentations, reviews and client work. You don’t need prior banking knowledge or to arrive fluent in finance — we’ll help you build that through structured training and placements. What matters most is your mindset, your willingness to learn and your ability to work well with different people.
What you'll do
From day one, you’ll work with Relationship Managers and specialist teams to support Commercial Banking clients. You’ll help build a clear picture of each client’s business, goals and challenges, then see how HSBC brings the right people together to respond. You could help prepare client presentations, reports and credit papers, support strategic reviews and pitches, and carry out financial analysis and risk assessments on portfolios and transactions. You’ll also work with colleagues across Legal, Credit and Risk to understand how we deliver tailored solutions responsibly. Across your placements, you’ll get early exposure to client-facing work and see how strong relationships are built, grown and protected over time.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What you'll learn
You’ll build a strong foundation in commercial banking through structured training, four placements and a degree apprenticeship that blends study with real experience. Early on, you’ll learn how HSBC supports business clients, how key banking products work, and how regulation shapes the way we serve customers. As you progress, you’ll deepen your understanding of client needs, risk, credit, and relationship-led banking. You’ll also work towards a BSc (Hons) in Applied Retail and Commercial Banking with the University of Exeter. By the end of the programme, you’ll have developed practical banking knowledge, stronger commercial judgement, and the confidence to grow into a client-facing role.
Where you'll work
You’ll work in HSBC’s Commercial Banking business, alongside Relationship Managers and specialist teams who support clients of different sizes and sectors. It’s a collaborative environment where banking, credit, risk and legal teams come together to deliver joined-up support for businesses. In the UK, you’ll be part of a client-focused team culture that values trust, teamwork and strong communication. You can expect a professional environment where no two days feel exactly the same, with exposure to both office-based teamwork and client-facing activity.
