I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What You'll Do
The Renewables & Procurement Manager covers energy budgeting, renewable sourcing and supply procurement for a portfolio of multinational clients across European markets. Budgeting and cost forecasting are the backbone of the position: the tenders, the PPAs and the certificate work all feedback into a budget you own and defend in front of clients.
- Build electricity and gas budgets bottom-up across several countries: commodity, hedges, non-commodity costs, network tariffs, taxes and levies.
- Re-forecast during the year and explain the gaps against budget and against last year.
- Run scenarios (price spikes, volume changes, new regulated costs) and put a number on the options before a client commits to a hedging strategy.
- Source and manage renewables: PPAs, GOs and REGOs, green tariffs, biomethane.
- Price new offers, model the long-term cost, then keep the existing deals under control - volumes, cancellations, allocation across sites and reporting years.
- Lead multi-country tenders, from first supplier conversation to negotiation and award.
- Keep contracts running properly: site lists, price checks, renewals, reporting on exposure and savings.
- Follow the European and UK power and gas markets daily, and advise clients on what it means for their positions and their budget.

What We're Looking For
- 3+ years in energy procurement, budgeting or portfolio management in European markets.
- A solid grasp of European energy commodity markets: how power and gas price, what moves them, and how that reaches a client's bill.
- Deep knowledge of non-commodity costs, network tariffs, taxes and levies, and of how they build up into a total delivered cost.
- You have owned a budget, not just reported on one: built the model, chosen the assumptions, answered for the variance.
- Experience with PPAs and EACs. Green tariffs and biomethane are a plus.
- Advanced Excel. Power BI, Python or R are a bonus, not a requirement.
- Confident, critical use of LLMs in daily work: you know where they save you a day and where they will quietly get the number wrong.
- Fluent English plus one other European language. A third is a plus.
- A degree in economics, finance, engineering, energy management or something similar.
- Some travel for client meetings and a couple of team get-togethers a year
