Job Description: Rental Manager

What will you be doing?

As a Rental Manager, you will lead the day-to-day management and performance of our internal rental operation, ensuring plant & vehicle requirements are fulfilled efficiently, accurately and within agreed service levels. You will be responsible for maximising utilisation and revenue from the owned commercial fleet, plant and equipment, reducing unnecessary external hire costs, and delivering an outstanding service to internal customers.

Reporting to the National Rental Operations Manager, you will manage a team of Rental Controllers, Optimisation Controllers and Transport & Logistics Supervisors driving performance, developing capability and ensuring operational excellence across the business. Working closely with Asset Management, Logistics, Workshops, Finance, Insurance and Business stakeholders, you will play a key role in shaping and improving our rental operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the Rental team, ensuring high standards of customer service, compliance and performance.
  • Manage all on-hire, off-hire, extension, transfer and exchange activity, ensuring requests are processed accurately and within agreed timescales.
  • Drive optimisation by maximising utilisation of owned assets and reducing avoidable external hire expenditure.
  • Forecast plant & vehicle demand and resource requirements to ensure availability aligns with business needs.
  • Deliver and exceed rental revenue and utilisation targets through effective operational management and commercial decision making.
  • Oversee financial controls including invoicing, purchase orders, rate reviews, reconciliations and dispute resolution.
  • Produce and analyse KPI and management information reports, implementing improvement plans where required.
  • Act as the escalation point for rental desk queries, customer issues and vehicle availability challenges.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across rental processes, systems and controls.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with M Group business leads and key stakeholders to support operational success.

What You'll Bring

  • Significant experience within Plant or Fleet rental, operations or asset management.
  • Proven experience leading and developing operational or customer service teams.
  • Experience managing asset utilisation, rental revenue, external hire expenditure and operational KPIs.
  • Strong financial awareness with experience managing P & L, reconciliations and invoice controls.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence and build strong relationships.
  • Strong analytical and organisational skills with a focus on accuracy and continuous improvement.
  • Proficient IT skills including Microsoft Office and fleet rental management systems such as Key2, InspHire or similar platforms.
  • Full UK Driving Licence and willingness to travel as required.
