Seed-funded DeepTech start-up based in Sheffield, developing a new advanced manufacturing technology for next-generation display hardware.
The company is at a very early stage of R&D and is building the hardware and experimental systems needed to develop, test and understand its core technology.
Hardware Development Engineer
Central Sheffield | Onsite

The Role
We are looking for a hands-on Hardware Development Engineer to design, build and integrate the physical systems supporting the company's R&D. This is a broad role combining mechanical design, prototyping, hardware integration and automation.
One of the first major projects will involve developing a proprietary reconfigurable pumping system, integrating existing pumps, drives, controllers and programmable routines into a reliable working platform.
Alongside this, you will work across a changing range of engineering projects supporting the company's experimental coating and development systems.

Responsibilities:
- Design and build hardware, test rigs, fixtures and experimental systems
- Take projects from concept through design, prototyping, testing and iteration
- Design components and assemblies using CAD
- Integrate mechanical, electrical and control components into working systems
- Work with pumps, motors, sensors, actuators, controllers and other off-the-shelf hardware
- Prototype, troubleshoot and improve engineering systems
- Develop practical jigs, fixtures and tools to improve R&D efficiency
- Work closely with process engineers to turn experimental requirements into practical hardware
- Manage external prototyping and fabrication partners where required
What We're Looking For
- Strong practical mechanical design and hardware development capability
- Experience using CAD and turning designs into physical prototypes or systems
- Evidence of taking ownership of a significant hardware project from concept to working solution
- Comfortable integrating mechanical and electrical components
- Strong hands-on problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Comfortable working in a small, fast-moving R&D environment where priorities can change quickly

Candidates could come from industry, a start-up or academia. Strong PhD candidates with significant hands-on hardware development experience will also be considered. Experience with automation, control systems, embedded systems, fluidics, motion control, scientific instrumentation or advanced manufacturing equipment would be useful, but isn't essential.
For more experienced candidates, experience with technical documentation, external suppliers, project ownership or mentoring engineers would also be valuable.
This role would suit someone who enjoys being given an engineering problem, working out what needs to be built, and then taking responsibility for making it work.
You will be joining at a very early stage, with significant ownership and the opportunity to directly shape the engineering capability around the company's core technology.
