About the Role
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated research assistant to work on an NIHR-funded study, BRaINS-TBI (Biomarkers for RAtional Investigation for Neurological decision Support in TBI), a UK-wide, multi-centre project investigating how biomarkers can improve care after mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). The role will be based in Cambridge, within Professor Virginia Newcombe's group, with the study coordinated by the University of East Anglia Clinical Trials Unit and involving collaborators across the UK.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to research addressing two key questions following mild TBI: whether biomarkers can help predict patient outcomes, and whether they can reduce the number of unnecessary CT brain scans performed in emergency departments.
- Focus primarily on following up recruited patients.
- Opportunities to get involved in other aspects of the study, including data analysis and manuscript preparation, depending on interest and experience.
- Receive appropriate training as required.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
