Location

West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK

About the Role

This position involves conducting research on the energy, carbon, and water implications of AI computing and data-centre infrastructure. The role will develop quantitative and data-driven methods to link AI workloads and token generation with computing hardware, data-centre electricity demand, cooling requirements, grid carbon intensity, and local water-system conditions. The goal is to create engineering metrics, assessment frameworks, and operational strategies for more energy-efficient and low-carbon AI data centres.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research in the Power Electronics Research Group.
  • Contribute to the Group's research on efficient electrical infrastructure for high-density computing.
  • Develop quantitative and data-driven methods to link AI workloads and token generation with various energy systems.

Qualifications

  • Expertise: Knowledge of AI computing and data-centre energy systems, including AI workloads, power conversion and delivery, cooling and thermal management, grid interaction, and energy, carbon, and water performance.
  • Skills: Proficiency in energy, carbon, and water assessment, quantitative modelling, large-scale data analysis, and computational tools such as Python, MATLAB, or equivalent.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
