Research Assistant/Associate in Magnetic Materials Synthesis and Characterisation

A position exists for a Research Assistant/Associate in Magnetic Materials Synthesis and Characterisation in the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, to work on a multidisciplinary research programme developing protein-guided, droplet-based routes to architected functional materials, as part of an Advanced Research + Invention Agency-funded project, subject to contract negotiations. The post holder will be located at the main Engineering Site in central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK, with work also regularly required at the University West Cambridge site.

The Project

The project, collaborating across seven research groups, is studying:

  1. How to create rare-earth free magnetic materials at scale and in useful formats
  2. How to create advanced, nanoporous electrodes for high capacity, long-life battery technologies

Responsibilities

The appointee will take substantial responsibility within a team focused on the materials characterisation aspects of the project. In particular, the role will be responsible for establishing rapid screening and definitive characterisation of magnetic materials, relating XRD-verified phase and structural order to hysteresis, coercivity, remanence, squareness, and BHmax.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
