Postdoctoral Research Associate in Plant-Pathogen Interactions
We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the Crop Pathogen Immunity group at the University of Cambridge, Department of Plant Sciences. The successful applicant will work at the Crop Science Centre, a multidisciplinary research environment designed to accelerate the transition to sustainable agriculture.
Research Focus
The research will investigate how plant roots respond to infection by the emerging root-knot nematode Meloidogyne enterolobii. The project will combine quantitative infection biology with single-nucleus transcriptomics to resolve the root cell types and molecular programmes that support or restrict nematode invasion, feeding-site establishment and development. A complementary strand will explore whether cell-resolved transcriptional maps can also be generated for the nematode during parasitism, providing an integrated view of host and parasite responses.
Collaboration
The appointee will work closely with Dr Lida Derevnina and members of the Crop Pathogen Immunity group. They will be expected to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team, and to support the training and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate researchers.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
