About This Role
We are seeking to appoint a fixed-term full-time Research Associate in Composite Modelling & Simulation, to contribute and support the Innovate UK funded project “AdVanced wIngs enAbling ulTra effIcient propulsiON_1, alongside a dynamic team of researchers and academics at the School of Engineering in UWE Bristol. This project is a multi-partner activity with Airbus UK as the lead, and aims to deliver enhanced wing structures and system equipping technologies required to integrate ultra-efficient and zero-carbon emission propulsion systems that will be needed to deliver gains in future aircraft performance. As part of AVIATION_1, UWE Bristol is responsible for the delivery of a Work Package titled “Ultra Thick Composite Structures” with specific goals of:
- Develop tooling and curing technologies for ultra-thick structures; minimise industrial penalties, and enhance industrial viability.
- Increase structural thickness; whilst protecting high-rate manufacture through the use of a conventional cure cycle and not reducing ramp rate to avoid exotherm.
- Enable complex configurations; minimise the integration penalty of system equipping technologies and propulsion systems.
- Virtual and physical demonstration; without defect at curing cycles capable of high-rate production.
We are developing a novel approach to traditional composites manufacturing to achieve these goals, where dynamic responses to thermal behaviour are realised. The focus of this post is on the modelling and simulation of the novel approach, specifically the influence of material properties on thermal behaviour, and on integration of outputs, to form successful demonstrators.
The successful candidate will possess a diverse skill set in advanced composites, and be well-versed in both liquid infusion processing and thermal modelling. We are looking for individuals who not only possess a strong academic background, but also have practical experience in the Aerospace, Automotive, and Renewable Energy industries. The successful candidate will develop and conduct research individually or as part of the research team, to successfully investigate “Ultra Thick Composite Structures”. They are expected to design, develop, and conduct research studies to support the work package aims, and to support the dissemination of findings to academic and non-academic audiences. Activities will include (but not limited to):
- Design and execute composite processing experiments, using experiences in liquid infusion processes, to test the influence of thermal run-away/exotherm behaviour in thick composite structures.
- Model and simulate thermal behaviour, building on well-defied work to date to form a predictive capacity in relation to geometry and cure conditions.
- Support the development and laboratory integration of a novel approach to traditional composites manufacturing - where a complex arrangement of tool and cure setup is to be realised.
- Support manufacturing trials with the novel approach, building up capability and performance such that successful first article through to final demonstrators are produced.
- Modelling the physio-chemical performance of parts produced in manufacturing trials; data analysis and presentation of findings.
- Dissemination of findings to internal and external partners, including opportunities for journal and conference papers.
This is an excellent opportunity to join a highly collaborative project with real-world impact and to contribute to innovative research in advanced composites.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
