Research Associate in Electromagnetic Non-Destructive Evaluation and Inspection
We are seeking a motivated and collaborative individual to join our team as a Research Associate in Electromagnetic Non-Destructive Evaluation and Inspection. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the EPSRC-funded Frontiers in Electromagnetic Non-Destructive Evaluation Research (FENDER) programme, which seeks to bring game-changing ideas and exploit advances in complimentary areas of science to trigger a UK-led renaissance in electromagnetic NDE, boosting the UK’s reputation, energising a world-leading research community and achieving downstream commercial impact via a broad network of industrial partners. The Programme is led by the University of Manchester and involves four other Universities (Bristol, Warwick, Newcastle and Strathclyde). The initiative is supported by approximately 25 industrial partners which are some of the major NDE users, within a dynamic and inclusive environment.
You will have responsibility to:
- Model and optimise electromagnetic sensors and coil configurations.
- Design, prototype and validate EM sensors and arrays for defects and materials.
- Develop sensor-interface electronics and multi-channel data acquisition, improving the real-time hardware and firmware, and implementing algorithms with other team members.
- Develop real-time acquisition, processing, and control software.
- Assist in the development of the data acquisition system for sensor arrays.
- Support commercialisation partners in the further development of systems into a commercial product.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
