This is an opportunity for talented researchers in experimental materials science and/or condensed matter physics to create new nanoscale capillaries and devices based on assembly of atomically-flat crystals and study molecular and ion transport through them. The post is available immediately for up to 36 months and is based at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, a world-class science centre with a broad scope of research.

Responsibilities

  • Adhering to all relevant health and safety procedures.
  • Maintaining accurate, comprehensive and secure records of research data.
  • Training students and others in skills appropriate to the project.
  • Preparation of research papers for publication.

  • A strong publication record in internationally peer-reviewed journals and an ability to write scientific reports and contribute to writing research papers.
  • Experience in the following is required: fabrication of nanoscale devices, preferably using atomically thin materials; their characterisation; photolithography and e-beam lithography; thin-film deposition; wet and reactive ion etching; SEM and AFM characterisation.

  • Good written and oral communication skills, including communicating technical information effectively, proven by a strong publication record.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
