Closing Date: 6 September 2026

The Role

We are delighted to be seeking a motivated individual to join the AI Group within the School of Computing at Newcastle University. The postholder will work on an EPSRC funded IAA project, leading the development and evaluation of AI models for the design and optimisation of integrated energy systems in public buildings. They will analyse heterogeneous datasets, create realistic what-if scenario analyses, and develop trustworthy AI tools and software prototypes to optimise energy cost, carbon emissions, and demand-side flexibility under uncertain building operating conditions. The postholder will collaborate with academic researchers, public-sector stakeholders, and industry partners to ensure that the developed solutions address practical challenges in decarbonising public estates.

The successful applicant will possess excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to undertake high-quality, impactful research. They should be self-motivated, capable of managing their own research activities, and committed to delivering innovative AI solutions that support the transition towards low-carbon and energy-positive public buildings.

This post is available from 23 September 2026 on a full-time, fixed-term basis until 22 September 2027. For all informal enquiries, please contact Dr Wanqing Zhao (Wanqing.Zhao@newcastle.ac.uk).

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
