We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated and enthusiastic postdoctoral research fellow to work on aluminium batteries as part of the Faraday Institution Ultrastore programme. Candidates must have (or almost completed) a PhD in chemistry or a related discipline. A track record in the development of ionic liquid-based electrolytes and studying interphases in batteries is preferred. The candidate will work within the Nottingham Applied Materials and Interfaces Group at the University of Nottingham, reporting to Profs. Darren Walsh and Graham Newton. The aqueous aluminium battery is very promising for our future energy-storage requirements, as it could potentially store large amounts of electrical energy inexpensively. However, the performance of the battery is limited by the irreversibility of aluminium plating in aqueous electrolytes. The project will focus on the development of electrolytes and additives that drive reversible aluminium plating, and will involve the development of methods for modifying aluminium surfaces and electrochemical analysis of the modified materials.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
