I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

About the Role
This new Research Computing Storage Administrator role will help develop the storage foundations of the University’s evolving research computing environment. You will maintain, improve and integrate storage services supporting established HPC and HTC clusters alongside the developing Trusted Research Environment and Research File Service, helping researchers move, manage and use data securely across increasingly complex computing platforms.
The role will suit a self-directed technical specialist who is comfortable taking ownership, applying their judgement and helping to shape services as the new unit develops. Working with technical specialists across OxRC and colleagues in information security, information governance and research teams, you will tackle complex storage challenges and contribute expertise across technologies including parallel filesystems, Ceph-based storage, Linux, high-speed networking and data movement. You will also help develop controlled dataflows, including Globus-based services, and support the evidence, documentation and guidance needed for secure and compliant research data services.
