R&D Tax Manager to Associate Director - North

About the Role

We are seeking an R&D Tax Manager to Associate Director to lead our team of consultants in the North West, helping innovative companies across the region identify and secure Research & Development tax incentives.

Leading from the front on a varied portfolio of innovative businesses, you will manage and develop a team of R&D consultants while working directly with founders, technical leads and senior stakeholders to assess complex projects against UK R&D tax legislation. The role combines hands-on technical delivery with genuine leadership: setting standards, reviewing output and shaping how the team grows.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

This is an opportunity for a technically minded leader to take ownership of a growing regional practice, with a clear route to Associate Director and beyond.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Lead and develop a team of R&D tax consultants in the North West, setting the standard for quality, compliance and client care.
  • Oversee a portfolio of claims spanning a broad range of sectors, from software and engineering through to manufacturing and life sciences.
  • Conduct and review technical discussions and interviews with client stakeholders to identify qualifying R&D activities.
  • Review technical narratives and supporting documentation to ensure claims are robust, compliant and clearly evidenced against HMRC R&D legislation.
  • Oversee the compilation and review of qualifying R&D expenditure and supporting financial schedules.
  • Act as the senior point of contact for claim submissions and HMRC enquiries, supporting the team through responses where required.
  • Build lasting client relationships and identify opportunities to grow the practice across the North.
  • Coach, mentor and develop consultants, giving clear feedback and supporting their technical and career progression.

This is a client-facing role. You will spend meaningful time with the businesses you support, building genuine relationships rather than running a transactional process.

  • Lead kick-off meetings and technical interviews with client stakeholders
  • Translate complex technical and scientific information into clear, HMRC-compliant narratives
  • Act as a trusted point of contact throughout the claims process, keeping clients informed at every stage
  • Identify opportunities to add further value across Sedulo's wider service offering

What We Are Looking for:

You will come from a technology or technical background rather than a finance one. We are open on sector, what matters most is curiosity, commercial awareness, and a commitment to doing things properly:

  • Degree in a technology, engineering, science or other technical discipline, we are open on the specific field.
  • Significant experience preparing and reviewing R&D tax relief claims, with a track record of managing your own portfolio.
  • Confidence engaging with technical teams across a wide range of technologies and sectors, and the ability to get to grips with new subject matter quickly.
  • Experience leading, mentoring or managing consultants, with the ability to raise standards and bring people with you.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts into clear written documentation.
  • Strong commercial awareness and the ability to balance multiple client engagements alongside team priorities.
  • Ambition to progress to Associate Director and help shape a growing regional practice.
