Software Research Engineer - Retrieval & Agent Intelligence - Edinburgh, UK (fully onsite)
About the Role
We are seeking a Software Research Engineer with a passion for cutting-edge AI research to join our Retrieval and Agent Intelligence (RAI) team in Edinburgh. In this role, you will act as the crucial bridge between abstract AI research and hardened, production-grade software architecture. You will collaborate closely with top-tier researchers to design, prototype, and scale next-generation knowledge retrieval and agentic AI systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Bridge abstract AI research and hardened software architecture by developing high-quality research prototypes and production-ready services.
- Build next-generation knowledge retrieval and agentic AI technologies (e.g., hybrid GraphRAG with late interactions, knowledgeable agents, dynamic context compression, highly efficient agent memory, and advanced goal/state management for long-horizon reasoning and planning).
- Take ownership of data preparation, algorithmic design, model integration, engineering, and product scaling.
- Contribute to internal engineering efforts, open-source software development, and deployment pipelines.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
