Full Time, Fixed Term contract of 19 months assuming a 1 October 2026 start date
About The Role
This post is funded by the Leverhulme Trust and supports Professor Steven King and his project 'Welfare fraudsters: A long history 1601-2027'. Put simply, this grant is about finding, reconstructing and then writing about the stories of welfare fraudsters across this long period. The project does not seek to make moral judgements - people end up committing fraud for many reasons, some well beyond their control, or are accused of it when completely innocent - but rather to draw out the complexities of the way that poor people interact with the welfare system as differently constellated between 1601 and the present. You will need:
- To be a good storyteller
- To be good at rooting out complex life histories and stories or reconstructing them where they are not obvious
- To be confident in the identification and exploitation of both online and archival resources across this wide period
- To be able to read frankly awful handwriting
- To have experience of co-writing
- To be willing to travel to archives
- To show experience and interest in the histories of the British welfare system
For more details, please take a look at the role profile. We'll still consider applications even if you don't meet every single one of the requirements, so don't be put off if you don't match them perfectly. To ensure the diverse needs of our team are met we actively encourage secondments and offer flexible working patterns - we're focused on finding the right person for the role.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
