Background
We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow in statistics, or a related field, to join our research team in the Department of Applied Health Sciences. The successful candidate will support quantitative research activities across a range of projects within respiratory disease. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to impactful applied health research and influence future models of care for people living with respiratory conditions.
The post holder will play a key role in supporting quantitative data analysis, including the development of statistical analysis plans, and interpretation in a cluster trial setting. There are also opportunities to work on related methods, including development of simulation-based analysis and computational methods. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team, including clinicians, epidemiologists, statisticians, and health economists.
This role is particularly suited to candidates with a strong quantitative background. We welcome applicants with training in mathematics, statistics, health economics, or epidemiology, particularly those with good numeracy and a strong interest in applied health research. We do not require a previous background in randomised trials. Familiarity with statistical analysis software (e.g., STATA, R, SPSS) and experience working with health-related data will be advantageous. The ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and communicate findings clearly is essential.
Role Summary
- Develop statistical analysis plans and related statistical code
- Contribute to methodological work around cluster randomised trials
- Contribute to generating academic publications, and reports
- Contribute to public understanding of respiratory conditions, implementation research, and inequalities

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
