Research Fellow in Igneous Petrology & Quantitative Textural Analysis
The School of Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow in Igneous Petrology & Quantitative Textural Analysis to contribute to ongoing research into igneous crystal textures using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). This is a fixed term (six months), part-time position (0.5 FTE, 17.5 hours per week).
About the Role
The successful candidate will work closely with Dr Martin Mangler on research projects focused on the quantitative analysis of crystal textures (including crystal shapes, twinning, synneusis) in volcanic and plutonic rocks using EBSD and related techniques. The postholder will contribute specialist expertise in the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of EBSD datasets and will help expand the use of these techniques within ongoing research projects.

Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the preparation of peer-reviewed publications arising from collaborative research.
- Contribute to the development of future research funding proposals.
- Develop independent fellowship applications.
Qualifications and Experience
- Hold a PhD in igneous petrology, volcanology, geochemistry, or related geoscientific discipline.
- Have experience in quantitative textural or microstructural analysis of igneous rocks.
- Possess substantial experience in EBSD sample preparation, data acquisition, processing, and interpretation.
- Ability to travel within the UK for collaboration with internal and external analytical facilities.
Location
The role will be based at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton. The School of Ocean and Earth Science offers a vibrant and internationally recognized research environment, offering excellent opportunities for networking and collaboration across volcanology, petrology, geochemistry, and environmental geosciences.

Working Arrangements
Hybrid working and flexible working patterns are permitted for this position, provided a work schedule is agreed in advance with Dr Mangler.
