Applications for Research Fellowships in Human-AI Collaboration

Applications are invited for up to three research fellowships focused upon how people and AI can and should work together in a collaborative partnership. The fellowships are jointly hosted by the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, and the University of Salford, and supported by the UK Government. The fellowships are initially through until March 2028, with the possibility of an extension.

Application Requirements

Applicants are requested to submit a brief research proposal addressing the topic of human-AI collaboration with their application. If successful, they will be required to revise this proposal, in consultation with colleagues from the UK Government, both to address government priorities and to improve the fit of the proposal with the demands of the National Security context, where advances in AI capability could give significant efficiency gains but must be balanced against a strong regulatory regime.

Some of the research will assume a standard academic form, and fellows will be expected to pursue publication in relevant academic journals, subject to approval from the government sponsor. Some may be classified and intended for use by the UK Government and their partner organizations only. Fellows will therefore gain experience of two very different research environments and of negotiating the complexities of working between them.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Fellowship Details

Fellows will have a base within one of the partner universities. They will have mentors both within their university and the UK Government, to offer guidance and support. Mentors from the organizations will work together to ensure coherence and consistency in their advice and support. Fellows will be required to be in Manchester several days a week and so are expected either to be located in the North-West or willing to relocate.

Eligibility

Applicants should have completed or at least submitted a relevant PhD and have expertise in behavioral science, AI, machine learning, and/or an intersection of those fields. This expertise should be explained in a letter of application and demonstrated in the abovementioned proposal, which short-listed candidates will be expected to present at interview.

The fellow must be eligible and willing to apply for national security clearance at a minimum level of Enhanced Security Clearance (eSC) and a preferred level of Enhanced Developed Vetting (eDV), making them subject to the provisions of the Official Secrets Act (which includes restrictions on travel to certain countries). UK nationals currently resident in the UK will normally be eligible, but all applicants should carefully consider their eligibility before applying for the fellowship. Information about vetting and clearance can be found on the UK Government Security Clearance website. The employer reserves the right to terminate a fellowship in the event of a loss of security clearance.
