About us
Hephaestus Technologies is a London-based startup using machine learning and computational physics to discover new superconducting materials for the wires that will power fusion reactors. Our work sits at the intersection of condensed matter physics, materials simulation and deep learning. We're a small, technical team where your work directly shapes what we build and discover.
The role
You'll build and improve the simulation and ML tooling at the core of our materials discovery pipeline. You'll work closely with our theorists and experimentalists, turning physical insight into robust, scalable code and models.
What you'll do
- Develop, optimise, and maintain physics simulation code for materials modelling
- Build and train deep learning models for materials screening
- Integrate simulation and ML workflows into a reliable, reproducible research pipeline
- Collaborate with theory and experimental colleagues to prioritise and validate candidate materials
- Contribute to research direction and help keep our engineering standards high

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
