Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Technician to join our team at Mitotype and build their career alongside genuine world-leading expertise, within a progressive company that cares about its people as much as the science.
You will contribute to pioneering research in the development of therapies for neurodegenerative and mitochondrial-related diseases. Working alongside specialist experts, you will support cutting-edge projects delivered in partnership with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, helping to advance the next generation of medicines through rigorous, evidence-led research. You will utilise proprietary methodologies including high-throughput imaging assays developed by Professor Heather Mortiboys to generate meaningful insights from patient-derived cell models, such as fibroblasts and induced neurons.

Person Specification
You should provide evidence in your application that you meet the following criteria. We will use a range of selection methods to measure your abilities in these areas, including reviewing your online application, seeking references, inviting shortlisted candidates to interview and other forms of assessment relevant to the post.
Essential Skills
- Have a good honours degree (or equivalent experience)
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, report writing skills, experience of delivering presentations, communicating to staff at all levels the organisation’s strategic plan and their personal contribution towards it
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team to meet deadlines
- Ability to develop creative approaches to problem solving
- Ability to analyse and solve problems with an appreciation of longer-term implications
- Ability to assess and organise resources, and plan and progress work activities
- Attention to detail and a proven ability to keep accurate and reliable records
- Good organisational and time management skills
Desirable Skills
- Experience of working in tissue culture
- Knowledge and understanding of mitochondrial assays
- Experience of reviewing individual progress and performance, and embedding organisational strategy into individual performance planning
- Experience in developing and maintaining a network of contacts throughout own work area
- Experience of adapting own skills to new circumstances

Job Description
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Grow and maintain patient-derived fibroblasts, induced neuronal progenitor cells, induced neurons and induced glial cells
- Completing customer project cell-based assays and data analysis
- Completing research and development projects
- Maintain an accurate database of project results
- Interface with customers
- Maintain an accurate database of cell banks and chemical compounds
- Undertake technical tissue culture work, including keeping the room clean and tidy, cleaning incubators and hoods periodically and taking care of reagent stocks.
- Using, writing and amending Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (CoSHH) forms, Risk Assessments and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) under legal requirements.
- Provide assistance and information to users (e.g COSHH forms, Risk Assessments and Standard Operating Procedures) as appropriate to the grade, referring to experienced staff and/or line manager as necessary
- Prioritise own work within a general plan in conjunction with project leads to meet deadlines
- Carry out planning to ensure that quarterly objectives are met
- Maintain an accurate database
- Any other duties commensurate with the grade of this post
- As a member of staff, you will be encouraged to make ethical decisions in your role

Reward Package
- Terms and conditions of employment: Research Assistant
- Salary for this grade: £26,000 - £30,000 per annum.
- This post is permanent, with a 3-month probationary period.
- This post is full-time: 40 hr week, with expected weekend work.
- This role has been identified as a full-time post, but we are committed to exploring flexible working opportunities with our staff, which benefits both the individual and Mitotype. Opportunities to work from home will be limited due to the lab-based nature of this role.
