I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

You will also play an important role in maintaining laboratory organisation, stock management and health and safety standards while helping to foster a collaborative and inclusive research environment.

About you

You will have a technical or scientific qualification in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biological Sciences or a related discipline, together with practical laboratory experience in molecular biology, biochemistry or protein science techniques. Experience of recombinant protein expression and/or protein purification methods, maintaining accurate experimental records, and working safely within a laboratory environment is essential. You will be organised, detail-oriented and confident using standard IT applications to support data recording, documentation and communication.

You will be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, managing routine technical activities while maintaining high standards of accuracy and laboratory practice. Experience with chromatography systems, biophysical methods, cryoEM sample preparation, cell culture or academic research laboratories would be advantageous but is not essential.
