About MacroSfera

MacroSfera is a student-led media publication exploring financial markets, economics and geopolitics, with a focus on making complex developments accessible to a wider audience. We publish independent, well-researched analysis and value critical thinking, attention to detail, intellectual curiosity and an ambitious approach to learning. MacroSfera brings together students and emerging professionals from universities and backgrounds internationally, providing contributors with an opportunity to develop their research, analytical and writing abilities while contributing to a growing publication.

The Role

As a Research Writer, you will research and analyse developments across geopolitics, economics and financial markets. You will turn your research into clear, structured and engaging articles that help readers understand significant developments and their wider implications. You will work alongside senior editors throughout the research, writing and editing process.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Researching developments across geopolitics, economics, financial markets and related areas.
  • Monitoring current affairs and identifying topics that are relevant and interesting to MacroSfera's audience.
  • Conducting research using credible and reliable sources.
  • Analysing and synthesising information from multiple sources.
  • Assessing different perspectives and distinguishing between established facts, analysis and claims.
  • Producing clear, structured and engaging articles that make complex subjects accessible.
  • Exploring the wider economic, political or financial implications of significant developments.
  • Working with senior editors to refine arguments, structure, accuracy and writing style.
  • Meeting agreed publishing deadlines.
  • Responding constructively to editorial feedback and developing your work through multiple drafts.
  • Engaging with reader feedback and contributing ideas for future content.
  • Collaborating with other writers and members of the editorial team.

What You Can Gain

Although this is an unpaid volunteering position, contributors receive practical experience and opportunities designed to provide genuine professional value. As a MacroSfera Research Writer, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Build a published portfolio of research and analytical writing that you can reference on your CV, LinkedIn and future applications.
  • Develop research and analytical skills by investigating real-world geopolitical, economic and financial developments.
  • Strengthen your ability to evaluate information, including assessing sources, fact-checking claims and synthesising information from multiple perspectives.
  • Develop your understanding of global affairs and the relationship between geopolitics, economics and financial markets.
  • Receive editorial feedback from senior members of the publication and develop your writing through multiple drafts.
  • Develop professional writing skills applicable to careers in finance, economics, consulting, journalism, policy, research and related fields.
  • Work with students and emerging professionals internationally, expanding your professional network beyond your university.
  • Progress within MacroSfera into senior writing, editorial or leadership responsibilities as the organisation grows.
  • Gain experience working to editorial standards and deadlines in a collaborative remote environment.

Current and previous MacroSfera writers have received offers from firms including JPMorgan, Optiver, Mizuho and Morgan Stanley, among others.

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for individuals who demonstrate:

  • Strong attention to detail and a willingness to improve their work.
  • The ability to work independently and meet agreed deadlines.
  • Genuine interest in geopolitics, economics, financial markets or global affairs.
  • Foundational knowledge of at least one of these areas.
  • Strong research skills, including the ability to identify, evaluate and synthesise credible sources.
  • Excellent written communication skills, with an emphasis on clarity, structure and readability.
  • Intellectual curiosity and a willingness to explore complex issues.
  • The ability to critically assess information and consider different perspectives.
  • Adaptability and a willingness to incorporate editorial feedback.

Desirable Experience

The following are desirable but not essential:

  • Currently studying towards or having completed a degree in Economics, Finance, Accounting, Business, Politics, International Relations or a related subject.
  • Previous experience writing articles, essays, research or analytical content.
  • Previous involvement in a student publication, society, research project or similar organisation.
  • Familiarity with financial news, economic data, geopolitical developments or international affairs.
  • Experience conducting independent research using academic, governmental, institutional or reputable media sources.
