Reserving Actuary Specialist, AFR

The role will report to the Actuary, Corporate Actuarial – London Wholesale, in the Actuarial Financial Reporting team based in London.

Specialist, AFR will play a critical role in the reserving function, supporting the London Wholesale Actuary, as well as the Chief Actuary UK’& Lloyds and the Head of AXICL Reserving Actuary, in setting robust, well informed best estimate reserves. The successful candidate will demonstrate technical depth, commercial awareness and robust interpersonal skills to support the actuarial view of the portfolios.

What you’ll be DOING

  • Strategic Influence: Play a pivotal role in shaping the reserving view for high-profile, complex portfolios within the underwriting units.
  • High Visibility: Work closely with the UK and Lloyd’s Chief Actuary and senior leaders across underwriting, claims and finance- gaining visibility at the highest levels of the business.
  • Global Collaboration: Operate in a globally connected environment, working alongside talented teams across India, the UK, and other global offices, fostering a truly collaborative culture.
  • Exposure to Lloyd's Market Dynamics: Deepen your expertise in Lloyd's reserving, governance, and syndicate- specific nuances, with the opportunity to contribute to market- facing developments.
  • Innovation and Process Enhancement: Bring forward new ideas and challenge conventional approaches- whether in methodology, communication, or automation- within a function open to innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Leadership Development: Build and demonstrate leadership capability through mentorship, ownership of work streams, and influence across cross functional teams.
  • Career Progression: Be part of a dynamic and evolving actuarial function, with clear pathways to broaden your scope-whether in pricing, capital, portfolio analytics, or leadership roles.
  • Purposeful Work: Contribute to the strength and sustainability of the business by helping ensure that reserves are robust, well-communicated, and aligned to the underlying risk.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Best Estimate Reserving: Assist in developing and maintaining the actuarial best estimate reserves for a range of portfolios (including Wholesale Casualty), ensuring alignment with regulatory standards, Lloyd’s requirements and internal frameworks
  • Cross-Functional Engagement: Proactively engage with underwriters and claims professionals to understand portfolio dynamics, emerging trends, changes in underwriting strategy, and claims experience. Translate these insights into Actuarial judgments
  • Market Awareness and Portfolio Contextualization: Maintain a robust awareness of market developments, legal and economic environments, and competitive pressures to ensure reserving assumptions reflect the latest intelligence.
  • Communication of Results: effectively communicate reserving outcomes and assumptions to key stakeholders, particularly underwriting and claims teams. Tailor messaging to the audience to ensure clarity, transparency, and alignment
  • Collaborate Across all Internal Functions: work closely with other teams within actuarial function including data, financial reporting, governance and controls, other regional actuaries, corporate and syndicate actuarial teams - to ensure consistency, accuracy, and completeness of data and methodologies
  • Legal Entity Reporting: Support legal entity allocations and provide input into specific reserving committees, ensuring that results are appropriately attributed, understood and defendable across affected entities and stakeholders
  • Stakeholder Queries and Governance Support: Provide timely and accurate responses to questions from internal stakeholders, group functions and external stakeholders (e.g. regulators, auditors) as required.

What You Will BRING

We’re looking for someone who has these abilities and skills:

  • Extensive Reserving Experience: In non-life actuarial reserving, with a focus on Casualty lines preferred.
  • Lloyd's Market Knowledge: Demonstrated experience with Lloyd’s and/or syndicate reserving is desirable, including familiarity with Lloyd's regulatory requirements, reporting processes, and governance frameworks.
  • Robust Technical Foundation: proficient in reserving methodologies, actual software tools, and relevant statistical techniques. Able to form independent actuarial judgments while incorporating business context.
  • Cross- Market Collaboration: Proven ability to collaborate effectively across geographically dispersed teams, including colleagues in India, the UK, and global offices. Comfortable working in a matrixed environment with multiple stakeholders
  • Effective Communicator: Capable of presenting complex actuarial results and insights clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, particularly underwriters, claims professionals, and senior leadership.
  • Self-Driven and Solution Oriented: highly motivated, proactive, and able to work independently with minimal supervision. Brings a problem-solving mindset and a willingness to challenge the status-quo constructively.
  • Innovative and Commercially Aware: Curious and forward-thinking, with a desire to improve processes and contribute to business strategy through data-driven insights and actuarial perspectives.
  • Professional Qualification: Newly/Nearly Qualified actuary (e.g. FIA or equivalent) with a robust track record of continuing professional development.
