Job Summary
The Resettlement Directorate leads the department’s work to support the welcome, resettlement and integration of people seeking safety in the UK through protected routes, including the Homes for Ukraine and the Afghan Resettlement Programme.
Our work requires strong engagement with a range of departments, local and devolved government, civil society, and international partners to ensure we are helping these cohorts to secure appropriate accommodation and access the services they need to integrate into their new communities. We ensure that decision making takes into account community cohesion, housing, homelessness, and other local government considerations.
We are looking for a candidate to lead the operations of the Communities for Afghans scheme. The Communities for Afghans scheme provides grant funding to community groups to resettle Afghan households into their community.
The Role Will Include
- Managing finances and grant funding to local authorities and community organisations.
- Keeping a detailed track of funding and being prepared to report this to senior stakeholders.
- Managing relationships with local authorities.
- Keeping guidance for the scheme up to date.
- Reporting how the scheme is performing compared to its Key Performance Indicators.
The candidate may in future also be required to work on wider aspects of the Communities for Afghans scheme, including account managing the Principal Sponsors and strategic leadership of the scheme. The successful candidate may also be asked to work on wider Afghan Resettlement delivery or wider Asylum and Resettlement delivery.
Job Description
The successful candidate will be leading on operations for the Communities for Afghans scheme, including:
- Making financial payments and managing grant funding.
- Keeping track of payments.
- Financial reporting.
- Monitoring the scheme against the Key Performance Indicators and Grant Funding Agreements.
- Ensuring guidance for the scheme is kept up to date.
- Designing our engagement with local authorities and Strategic Migration Partners, including responding to queries; designing communications to Afghans on the scheme, or may join the scheme.
- The successful candidate may also work on wider delivery of the Afghan Resettlement scheme, or wider work of MHCLG’s Resettlement Directorate in general.
Person specification
The skills and experience the successful candidate will need to demonstrate are:
- Experience of operating complex schemes
- Experience of delivering for resettlement cohorts or other vulnerable cohorts
- A clear understanding of the UK Government’s and MHCLG’s role in resettlement
- Experience of working with Local Authorities and Strategic Migration Partners
- Experience of managing complex finances and keeping track of expenditure
- Confidence in presenting to various audiences, including senior stakeholders and large audiences

Application and Selection
The application process will be split into 2 stages, testing the following Success Profiles:

Stage 1: Sift
Experience: (Lead) - In 250 words please demonstrate your experience of delivering for resettlement cohorts. Behaviour: Changing and Improving Behaviour: Working Together Behaviour: Managing a Quality Service
There is a 250-word limit per question.
When Writing Your Application, Remember
the assessor won’t be reading your answers sequentially do not assume that the same assessors will have read all of your answers if talking about something in your first answer, make sure that you write the second answer as if you had not written the first (and so on!)

Sift and Interview Dates
Sifting is envisaged to take place the week commencing 17/08.
Interviews are envisaged to take place the week commencing 31/08 and are currently being held remotely via videocall. This could be subject to change.
