Resident Engagement Officer
This is an exciting opportunity to join Hackney Council, an innovative and forward-thinking local authority committed to pioneering initiatives that enhance resident safety.
We are seeking a dedicated, personable, and proactive professional to lead resident engagement within our Building Safety team. You will be supported by a strong team of building safety, compliance, and fire safety professionals. If you are passionate about giving residents a voice in the safety of their homes and enjoy building trust with communities, this role is for you.
The Role
Hackney Council is committed to ensuring residents are informed, consulted, and actively involved in decisions about the safety of their buildings. The Resident Engagement Officer will act as the primary point of contact between the Building Safety team and residents living in our higher-risk buildings, supporting compliance with the Building Safety Act 2022, the Fire Safety Act, and wider building and fire safety legislation.
The postholder will be responsible for developing and delivering our resident engagement strategies, coordinating dedicated building safety resident meetings and ensuring residents’ views are captured and fed into Building Safety Case decisions and the ‘golden thread’ of information. They will work closely with internal teams including the Building Safety Manager, Special Projects Manager, Fire Safety Team, repairs and directly with residents to ensure communication is clear, accessible, and responsive throughout.
About You
You will have significant experience engaging with residents or communities, ideally within housing, local government, or a related public-facing environment, with a strong understanding of resident engagement principles and an interest in building and fire safety. Experience within a local authority or similar organisation is highly beneficial, as you will be liaising with a wide range of stakeholders and acting as a key point of contact for residents on safety matters.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

In order to achieve this, we are seeking individuals who embody our “PROUD” values: Purpose and Respect, where we foster belonging through active inclusion, kindness, and open dialogue; Ownership, where we champion proactive collaboration and accountability for our shared success; and Unity and Diversity, where we work as one Council to break down silos and champion anti-racist behavior.
