Full-time, Permanent | 40 hours per week | Rota basis, including weekends
Salary: £26,600 - £29,120 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a compassionate, dependable and resilient Residential Support Worker to join our team at Thomas Bata House, our Children’s Home in East Tilbury.
In this role, you will provide high-quality, person-centred care to children and young people with a range of social, emotional and behavioural needs. You will help create a safe, stable and nurturing home environment where every young person feels valued, supported and encouraged to achieve their potential.
You will support young people with their daily routines, education, family relationships, emotional wellbeing and development of independence skills. You will also undertake keyworker responsibilities, contribute to individual care plans and maintain clear and accurate records of each young person’s progress.
Success in this role means building positive and professional relationships with young people, responding calmly and sensitively to challenging situations, maintaining consistently high standards of care and helping young people make meaningful progress towards positive outcomes.
You will work closely with the Registered Manager, Deputy Manager, Team Leaders, social workers, families and other professionals involved in each young person’s care.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Direct Care and Support
- Provide high-quality, person-centred care to children and young people.
- Support young people with their daily routines, personal care, appointments and recreational activities.
- Help young people access education, community activities, healthcare services and family contact.
- Promote independence by supporting young people to develop practical life skills, confidence and responsibility.
- Encourage young people to recognise their strengths, abilities and potential.
Keyworker Responsibilities
- Undertake keyworker responsibilities for allocated children and young people.
- Build positive, trusting and professional relationships while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
- Contribute to individual care plans, placement plans and risk assessments.
- Hold regular keywork sessions and support young people in working towards their agreed goals.
- Advocate for young people to ensure they have fair access to education, healthcare and development opportunities.
Safeguarding and Risk Management
- Safeguard and promote the welfare, rights and wellbeing of all children and young people.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of individual care plans, risk assessments and safeguarding arrangements.
- Recognise, respond to and report safeguarding concerns promptly.
- Follow the Home’s safeguarding, whistleblowing, health and safety, behaviour management and information-sharing procedures.
- Support young people through difficult situations using calm, sensitive and trauma-informed approaches.

Behaviour and Emotional Support
- Support young people with their emotional wellbeing and help them develop positive coping strategies.
- Respond appropriately to behaviours that may challenge, following agreed care and behaviour support plans.
- Help young people understand the impact of their actions and make safer, more positive choices.
- Act as a consistent and positive role model.
Recording and Reporting
- Maintain clear, accurate and timely electronic records.
- Record significant events, observations, incidents and progress in line with organisational requirements.
- Contribute to reviews, meetings, reports and assessments concerning the young people in placement.
- Ensure that important information is shared appropriately with managers and relevant professionals.
Home and Daily Operations
- Help maintain a safe, welcoming and nurturing home environment.
- Support with cooking, cleaning, shopping and general household responsibilities.
- Ensure that domestic standards demonstrate to young people that they are valued and cared for.
- Report maintenance, health and safety or environmental concerns promptly.
- Support the safe admission, ongoing care and discharge of young people in accordance with the Home’s policies and statutory responsibilities.
Teamwork and Professional Development
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to deliver consistently high standards of care.
- Develop positive working relationships with parents, carers, social workers, schools, healthcare professionals and other agencies.
- Attend and contribute to staff meetings, handovers, supervision sessions and young people’s reviews.
- Participate fully in the organisation’s induction, training and professional development programmes.
- Work within the Children’s Homes Regulations, Quality Standards and all relevant organisational policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCES
Essential
- Previous experience working with children or young people in a professional, voluntary or care setting.
- A compassionate, patient and empathetic approach.
- An understanding of safeguarding principles and the responsibilities involved in caring for vulnerable children.
- Strong communication, relationship-building and teamwork skills.
- The ability to remain calm, professional and responsive during challenging situations.
- Good written skills and the ability to maintain accurate records.
- Flexibility to work a rota covering Monday to Sunday, including weekends and public holidays.
- A commitment to completing relevant training and professional development.

Qualifications
Applicants should hold, or be willing to work towards, one of the following:
- Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare.
- Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People’s Workforce, including the social care pathway.
- NVQ Level 3 in Caring for Children and Young People.
- NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care.
- Another relevant Level 3 qualification in childcare or social care.
Desirable
- Experience working in a residential children’s home.
- Experience supporting children with emotional and behavioural needs.
- Knowledge of the Children Act 1989 and 2004, the Children’s Homes Regulations and relevant government guidance.
- Good knowledge of child safeguarding policies and procedures.
- Experience undertaking keywork sessions, completing care records or contributing to care plans.
- A full UK driving licence.
