About Nationwide Supplies
Based in Buntingford, Nationwide Supplies is an established, independent family-run builders' and plumbers' merchant. Operating with a ~£12m annual turnover, we supply everything from heavy-side building materials and timber to plumbing, drainage, and hardware to trade professionals and retail customers across the UK.
As our business continues to grow, we are looking for a commercial, hands-on Retail Accountant to take control of our daily transactional finances, margin tracking, stock accounting, and store/e-commerce reconciliations.
The Role
Working directly alongside our operational teams, yard managers, and senior management, you will sit at the centre of our financial operations. This is not a purely back-office role—you will actively bridge the gap between financial management and our busy trade counter, e-commerce platforms, and logistics teams.

Key Responsibilities
- Reconciliations & POS: Reconcile daily point-of-sale (POS) trade counter takings, card processor receipts, and e-commerce payments against bank accounts.
- Margin & Stock Accounting: Monitor product gross margins across building and plumbing ranges, manage COGS variance, analyse inventory stock-takes, and track shrink/damages.
- Rebates & Discount Schemes: Oversee complex supplier volume rebates and trade customer discount structures typical in the building materials trade.
- Month-End Financials: Prepare monthly management accounts, branch/department P&Ls, accruals, prepayments, and quarterly VAT returns.
- Ledger Oversight: Manage cash flow forecasting, high-volume AP invoices for raw materials/timber, and trade customer AR/credit limits.
What We Are Looking For
- Qualifications: ACCA / CIMA / AAT qualified (or finalist/part-qualified with strong building merchanting or retail experience).
- Experience: 3+ years of financial experience in a high-volume trade merchant, retail, distribution, or wholesale environment.
- Technical Skills: Strong proficiency in merchant ERP/POS software (e.g., K8, Intact, Sage) and advanced MS Excel skills (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUPs/XLOOKUPs).
- Mindset: Commercial, detail-oriented, and comfortable engaging with staff at all levels—from trade counter team members to company directors.
