The Role

As a Retail Area Manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day operational management of existing shops, and for the new shops as they open.

Supporting the Head of Retail, you will lead by example and ensure that employees, volunteers, supporters, donors, and customers understand how their contributions are making a difference to the lives of people in Yorkshire and beyond.

As our Retail Area Manager, you will need to be a creative thinker with experience of multi-site retail management in a charity or commercial retail organisation, good team-working skills, great customer service and excellent organisational skills. You will also need to be committed to creating a welcoming professional atmosphere and demonstrating the values of Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Specifically, you will:

  • Be responsible for the day to day line management for Shop Managers, Retail Support Managers and Assistant Retail Area Managers, including coaching, inspiring and motivating team members so they are clear about their role and feel fully supported in driving the charity forward.
  • Work closely with Shop Managers, Retail Support Managers and Assistant Retail Area Managers with regards to rota management and provide support where necessary to ensure each shop is sufficiently staffed.
  • Lead Shop Managers to deliver a consistent brand experience across the retail estate to customers and volunteers alike.
  • Coach and support Shop Managers to ensure they manage risk and implement and adhere to all shop operating policies and standards, including Health and Safety and Trading Standards.
  • Be accountable for an area budget and achieve or exceed budgeted income, expenditure, and contribution (net income).
  • Coach and lead Shop Managers and Retail Support Managers to deliver KPI’s, identifying areas of improvement and taking action where necessary.
  • Be responsible for identifying ways to maintain and maximise income in collaboration with the Shop Managers, whilst ensuring basic sales information is accessible to volunteers so they are kept up to date.
  • Ensure that all charity policies, shop standards and operating procedures are communicated effectively to all Shop Managers and effectively cascaded to volunteers. Regularly review that they are all maintained and followed in a consistent manner.
  • Ensure our shops are presented to the highest standards with attractive visual merchandising and window displays and coach the Shop Managers to continually improve visual merchandising standards and share best practice.
  • Be responsible for developing operational processes and ensuring each process is implemented in shops and communicated effectively to Shop Managers.
  • Be responsible for the recruitment and induction of Shop Managers, Retail Support Managers, and Deputy Shop Managers working with the People Team and following the charity’s recruitment process.
  • Lead, coach and develop the Shop Managers and Retail Support Managers, role modelling the internal PDR approach and wellbeing focus.

About You

To be considered for this role, you will need:

  • Experience of multi-site retail management in a charity organisation.
  • Experience of building and leading a team of employees and volunteers including recruitment and development.
  • Knowledge and experience of effective stock rotation and management.
  • Experience of meeting and exceeding targets within a retail environment.
  • Strong merchandising and/or retail display experience.
  • To be ideally educated to A Level or equivalent.
  • Convincing and persuasive written, oral and presentation skills with the ability to present ideas and issues, clearly, and coherently.
  • Be highly organised with good time management skills and the ability to prioritise a workload to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent IT skills and confident using Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Access to your own vehicle and a full UK driving licence with less than 6 penalty points.
