Retail Duty Manager
We are looking for a hands-on Retail Duty Manager who enjoys being visible on the shop floor, helping customers and making sure every shift is run well.
Westlands Farm Shop is an independent food retail business with stores in Wickham and Winchester. Our Winchester shop brings together quality fresh food, local produce and knowledgeable, friendly service. This role is responsible for running designated shifts, combining customer service, team leadership and disciplined daily routines.
Responsibilities:
- Leading by example on the shop floor and making warm, helpful customer service the standard for every shift.
- Taking responsibility for designated shifts, allocating work clearly and checking that agreed tasks have been completed properly.
- Opening and closing the store when required and responding calmly to day-to-day operational issues.
- Coaching team members, giving timely feedback and helping new colleagues learn the role.
- Maintaining attractive, well-stocked displays with accurate prices, strong availability and effective stock rotation.
- Following cash counting, banking and reconciliation procedures accurately, including all required checks and records.
- Supporting stock counts, waste control, ordering and other routines that protect margin and improve profitability.
- Maintaining high standards of food safety, cleanliness, allergen awareness, record keeping and general compliance.
- Reviewing the store from the customer's perspective and acting promptly when service or presentation falls short.
- Communicating clearly with the wider Westlands team about results, risks and actions required.

What good performance looks like:
The store is welcoming, organised and ready for customers; colleagues know what is expected and receive active support; cash, stock and compliance records are complete and accurate; and issues are raised early rather than allowed to drift. You will help improve sales, average customer spend, waste, availability and labour efficiency without losing the personal service that makes an independent farm shop distinctive.
About you:
- You have experience supervising people or running shifts in retail, hospitality or another customer-facing environment.
- You are naturally attentive to customers and are comfortable starting conversations and offering useful advice.
- You take ownership, notice what needs doing and follow through without waiting to be chased.
- You are organised and numerate, with the discipline to follow cash, stock and compliance procedures exactly.
- You can set expectations, check performance and address poor standards constructively.
- You communicate honestly and promptly, especially when something has gone wrong.
- You are able to work a flexible rota, including some early starts, weekends and bank holidays.

Food retail experience is useful but not essential. We are more interested in evidence of dependable leadership, excellent service and sound judgement.
