I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

  • Full responsibility for running a successful store — managing KPIs around people, store standards, customer service, and financial performance, maximising turnover and gross margin while controlling costs. Reporting to the Regional Manager, sharing best practice with your peers and learning from others' successes in your regional team.
  • Building a strong sales culture in-store: coaching your team to spot every opportunity to add value for the customer — confidently suggesting complementary products, seasonal offers, or additional services that genuinely improve the experience for pets and their owners. This isn't about hard-selling — it's about training your team to have great conversations that naturally lead to a bigger basket and a better-served customer.
  • Ensuring you and your team deliver the highest standards of pet care, with pet welfare always the top priority, and promoting responsible pet ownership.
  • Delivering exceptional customer service and a great shopping experience, with strong pet* and product* knowledge across the team. (*Training given)
  • Recruiting, motivating, training and developing your team, reviewing and managing performance, and helping to promote Jollyes as an employer of choice locally.
  • Clear communication of key business updates and individual/team objectives.
  • Genuinely hands-on, not office-based. You'll be out front with your team and customers — helping with deliveries, walking the floor, and driving performance through what you see and do in-store, not from behind a screen.
  • Physically active by nature. Our products can be heavy and retail keeps you on your feet most of the day — if the idea of a desk job doesn't appeal, this could be exactly what you're looking for.
  • If you'd need any reasonable adjustments to succeed in this role, just let us know in your application.

The Skills

To be successful in this role, joining as a Store Manager you’ll need the following skills and experience:

  • A genuine passion for pets and people — delighting customers with an unrivalled shopping experience. Expect to meet customers with paws, claws or feathers, so comfort around animals is a must.
  • Previous retail store management experience, with a hands-on approach to running the business day-to-day and planning for short, medium and long-term success.
  • Commercially confident on the shop floor — comfortable modelling and coaching upselling and add-on sales conversations with customers, not just reviewing sales figures after the fact.
  • A sound decision-maker who communicates objectives clearly and builds high-performing, engaged teams, with succession plans in place for future leaders.
  • A proven track record of developing business performance and exceeding KPIs, while maintaining high store standards, health & safety, and legal compliance.
  • Commercially aware, able to manage your P&L with a proactive approach.
  • Own transport with a UK driving licence, as occasional out-of-hours store visits or regional cover may be needed.
  • Full time, permanent — 40 hours/week, 5 days out of 7. Weekends can be our busiest days so some cover on weekends is required.
