The London Review of Books is looking for an experienced Retention Manager to join their dedicated subscription team.

Overview

The Retention Manager is responsible for developing and executing the London Review of Books subscriber retention programme, working to reduce churn, extend subscriber lifetime value (LTV) and deepen engagement across print and digital.

Reporting to the Head of Subscriptions, the Retention Manager owns the lifecycle marketing activity directed at existing subscribers, from renewal communications and win-back/re-activation campaigns to personalised engagement programmes and on-site interventions. The role is a pivotal position within the marketing team, working closely with the Head of Subscriptions, Subscription Operations, Acquisition Marketing, Audience, Customer Service and Technology teams to ensure retention activity is data-led, well-targeted and effectively delivered.

This role requires strong analytical skills, excellent campaign execution, a hands-on and results-driven approach to testing, and a close understanding of subscriber behaviour, in order to protect and grow the LRB’s subscription revenue. The ideal candidate is a self-starter, equipped to lead the retention function from the front, bringing a customer-focused view to the wider marketing department.

This a hybrid role, based in the London office.

Please see role details below, as well as information around applying for this position. Applications require a covering letter in addition to a CV.

Key Responsibilities

Working closely with Marketing, Subscriptions Operations, Audience, Customer Service and Technology, the Retention Manager owns all activity aimed at retaining existing subscribers, from onboarding and welcome series to renewal communications, win-back campaigns and on-site messaging. Their key responsibilities are:

Retention Strategy and Planning

  • Develop and own the subscriber retention strategy, setting clear targets for voluntary and involuntary churn reduction, renewal rates, save rates and subscriber lifetime value.
  • Map the full subscriber lifecycle — from onboarding through to renewal, lapse and win-back — leading onboarding initiatives in conjunction with the Audience team and identifying key moments of risk and opportunity, including customer friction points.
  • Segment the subscriber base by behaviour, tenure, channel and value, supporting the Head of Subscriptions in the implementation of audience segmentation modelling to inform targeted retention interventions.
  • Set and monitor retention KPIs, agreeing targets with the Head of Subscriptions and reporting progress regularly.

Lifecycle Campaign Execution

  • Plan and deliver renewal communications across email, print and digital channels, ensuring timely and well-targeted messaging.
  • Design and run win-back and re-activation campaigns for lapsed subscribers, including international subscribers, tailoring offers and messaging to different subscriber segments.
  • Develop personalised engagement programmes that improve perception of subscription value and encourage deeper use of LRB content and benefits, reducing the risk of cancellation.
  • Own on-site interventions such as cancellation flow messaging, save offers and pause options, working with Technology to implement and refine them.
  • Coordinate with the wider Marketing, Audience and Editorial team to ensure retention messaging is consistent with the LRB's brand voice and broader campaign activity.
  • Manage campaign briefs, timelines and approvals, working with internal teams and external suppliers as needed.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Testing and Optimisation

  • Bring a hands-on, results-driven approach to testing: design and run A/B and multivariate tests across renewal and win-back communications, on-site messaging and offers.
  • Use test results to continuously refine subscriber messaging, timing, channel mix and incentives, developing and iterating new retention ideas.
  • Document learnings from tests and campaigns, sharing insights with Marketing, Audience, Customer Service and Technology colleagues.

Data Analysis and Reporting

  • Own churn and retention reporting — including voluntary churn, involuntary churn, renewal rates, save rates and LTV — proactively monitoring trends, flagging emerging patterns early and pre-empting possible risks to the Head of Subscriptions.
  • Collate, create, manage and distribute regular retention reporting and dashboards covering key metrics such as renewal rate, churn rate and subscriber lifetime value.
  • Analyse subscriber behaviour and cohort data, including content engagement signals explored jointly with the Head of Audience, to identify patterns that inform retention strategy and campaign targeting.
  • Work with the external bureau team to ensure subscriber data is accurate, well-structured and accessible for analysis.
  • Present findings and recommendations clearly to senior stakeholders, translating data into actionable strategy.

Cross-Departmental Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Marketing team to align retention activity with acquisition campaigns, brand communications and editorial promotion, providing in-depth analysis and LTV modelling to inform acquisition strategy.
  • Partner with the Audience team to share insight on subscriber behaviour, engagement and satisfaction.
  • Collaborate with Technology to specify, test and implement retention tools, automations and website interventions.
  • Liaise with Finance and Customer Services on billing, payment failure recovery and subscriber queries relevant to retention.
  • Represent retention priorities in cross-departmental planning, ensuring subscriber experience is considered across the organisation.

Communication

  • Write clear, engaging and on-brand copy for subscriber communications, adapting tone for different segments and channels.
  • Communicate retention performance and plans effectively to the Head of Subscriptions and other stakeholders, acting as liaison between the retention function and other departments.
  • Build strong working relationships with colleagues across Marketing, Audience, Technology, Finance and Customer Services.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to queries relating to subscriber retention activity.
