About The Role
Are you looking to develop your career within lifting operations and become a fully qualified Rigger? We are seeking a motivated Rigger Improver to join our team on a major nuclear project at Sellafield.
This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with some experience in rigging, lifting operations, mechanical installation, or construction who are ready to build their skills in a highly regulated and safety-focused environment.
Working alongside experienced Riggers, Chargehands and Lifting Supervisors, you'll gain hands-on experience supporting critical lifting and rigging operations while following a structured development programme designed to help you progress towards a competent Rigger role.
What you'll be doing
Responsibilities
As a Rigger Improver, you will support the safe movement, installation and positioning of plant, equipment and materials across site. Your responsibilities will include:
- Assisting with lifting, rigging and installation activities under supervision
- Following lift plans, risk assessments, permits and safe systems of work
- Inspecting lifting accessories and reporting defects or certification concerns
- Helping to establish exclusion zones and maintain site safety during lifting operations
- Supporting the connection, movement and control of loads
- Using hand signals and communication methods effectively
- Maintaining high standards of housekeeping and safe working practices
- Working closely with lifting teams and other site trades
Training & Development
This role is designed as a development pathway towards becoming a fully competent Rigger.
You Will
- Complete a structured Rigger Improver development programme
- Gain practical experience across a variety of lifting and rigging tasks
- Receive coaching and mentoring from experienced professionals
- Participate in regular competence reviews
- Build evidence towards future authorisation and advancement

- Relevant rigging, lifting operations or mechanical/construction training
- Some practical experience within rigging, lifting, construction, mechanical installation or heavy industrial environments
- Understanding of safe lifting principles, lifting accessories and load control
- Ability to follow lift plans, method statements and risk assessments
- Strong commitment to health and safety
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Reliable attendance and timekeeping
- Willingness to learn and undertake further training and competence assessments
- Ability to obtain and maintain the required security clearance
Desirable
- CPCS, NPORS, ECITB, OPITO or equivalent lifting and rigging qualifications
- Experience within nuclear, energy, infrastructure, petrochemical or other highly regulated industries
- Experience using chain blocks, lever hoists, tirfors, shackles, slings and associated lifting equipment
- Working at Height, Confined Space or other relevant site-based training
- Mechanical, engineering or construction trade background
