Job Description

As a Risk & Assurance Adviser within Defence Risk & Assurance (DRA), you will help provide a clear picture of audit activity, assurance findings and improvement actions across Defence. You will work closely with the Government Internal Audit Agency (GIAA), colleagues across DRA and stakeholders throughout the Department to ensure audit management actions are effectively tracked, monitored and reported.

You will support assurance activity by coordinating information and evidence, monitoring progress against agreed actions, and identifying key themes and insights. Your work will help senior colleagues understand how effectively risks and controls are being managed and where further action or improvement may be needed.

A key part of the role is analysing information from a range of sources and turning it into clear, accessible insight. You will produce dashboards, reports and briefing material to support governance forums and senior decision-makers.

You will also help improve the tools, processes and reporting used to support assurance across Defence, contributing to better quality information, more effective oversight and a stronger assurance culture across the Department. As part of a small, collaborative team, you will have opportunities to contribute to a wider range of risk and assurance activities, developing your knowledge and experience across governance, assurance and risk management while supporting the wider work of DRA and Defence’s Risk Centre of Excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Track and manage audit management actions (AMAs), ensuring timely delivery, clear ownership and accurate reporting.
  • Support assurance activity by coordinating evidence, reviewing information and identifying insights into risk management and control effectiveness.
  • Coordinate internal and external audit activity, working with stakeholders across Defence to support information requests, evidence gathering and follow-up of agreed actions.
  • Maintain high-quality audit, risk and assurance information, ensuring data is accurate, consistent and accessible for reporting.
  • Analyse data to identify trends, themes and areas of risk, control weakness or improvement, drawing on audit, assurance, risk, performance and governance information.
  • Produce clear reports, dashboards and briefing material for senior leaders, boards and governance forums.
  • Support the day-to-day management of the GIAA contract from a delivery and information perspective, including tracking audit activity and coordinating relevant information.
  • Work with the Innovation & Improvement team to mature assurance reporting and management information, helping to develop more consistent, accessible and insightful reporting across Defence.
  • Build effective relationships with stakeholders across Defence to improve understanding of assurance, governance and risk management and support continuous improvement.
  • Support the wider work of Defence Risk & Assurance, with opportunities to develop broader experience across assurance, governance and risk management.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
