This role offers the chance to build experience in a Risk & Compliance team at the heart of a major UK law firm. You will be part of a supportive and collaborative team, working on varied matters that are important to the way the firm operates and supports its clients.

The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join a busy and evolving Risk & Compliance team, which forms part of the broader General Counsel function at Mills & Reeve. The team plays a central role in helping the firm manage legal, regulatory and operational risk, and in supporting the firm to meet the high professional standards expected of an SRA-regulated law firm.

Based in our Cambridge office, this is a varied and hands-on role with exposure to a broad range of risk and compliance work. Our paralegals are integral to the team and play a critical role in helping us meet internal expectations, manage priorities and deliver a responsive service to colleagues across the firm.

Each paralegal has a primary area of focus, while also building experience across the broader General Counsel function. For this role, the initial focus will be claims, complaints and insurance renewals, with opportunities to get involved in wider team projects and activities.

It would suit someone who is organised, curious and proactive, and who is interested in developing a career in risk, compliance, legal operations or professional services

The Person

This is a busy and challenging role and, to be successful, your background will:

  • Include strong academics that will most likely be to degree level;
  • Include office-based work experience of at least six months; and
  • Probably include experience of working within a law firm or regulatory environment.

The Role Requires Someone Who

  • Is proficient with IT and is familiar with MS Office, and in the responsible use of generative AI;
  • Has good communication skills, both written and oral, and is able to liaise confidently with staff and partners across the firm;
  • Can demonstrate an organised and methodical approach to their work;
  • Can meet deadlines when under pressure with multiple tasks;
  • Has proven research and analysis skills;
  • Has strong attention to detail; and
  • Is energetic and enthusiastic.

In Addition, You Will Need To Be

  • Willing to travel to the firm's other offices on occasion; and
  • Flexible and able to work longer hours as the role demands.

The Activities

A full list of responsibilities can be found in the job description attached below, but activities will include:

  • Take responsibility for the administration of any claims against the firm, liaising with Finance, relevant partners and fee earners, and keeping internal records and documentation up to date.
  • Support the annual renewal process for a number of the firm's insurance policies, including cyber, professional indemnity, data protection and management liability.
  • Record incidents, breaches and risks on the firm's internal database, ensuring information is captured accurately and escalated where appropriate.
  • Support the independent file review team with file reviews and thematic audits, including collating information, reviewing files against agreed criteria and recording findings clearly and accurately.
  • Assist with initial fact-finding and information gathering on risk and compliance queries, including reviewing documents, files and internal records.
