This is a broad, hands-on second line Risk Manager role, responsible for supporting, advising, and challenging colleagues across the Bank on the identification, assessment, management, and reporting of risk across all relevant risk types. The role holder will work closely with business areas and the wider second line team to promote, embed, and maintain the Bank’s Risk Management Framework, strengthen risk culture, and support effective governance and oversight.
The role requires, as a broad risk role, an individual who can provide practical risk input, independent guidance, and constructive challenge across risk and governance matters while helping the business understand, own, and manage its risks effectively.
Key Areas Of Responsibility
- Perform all activities as delegated by the Head of Risk.
- Act as a trusted Risk Business Partner to allocated business areas, providing proportionate advice, support, and constructive challenge on risk matters.
- Capture and assess risk events, working with the business to agree root cause, remedial actions, ownership, timelines, and any wider implications.
- Support new initiatives, projects, and change activity by helping identify, assess, monitoring, and manage risks throughout the project lifecycle.
- Lead and support the development of risk management capabilities across the business (e.g., risk appetite, policies, framework, processes, RCSAs, risk event reporting, scenario analysis, MI, etc.)

- Build effective relationships across the business and assist in shaping and raising the profile of Risk, promote leading practices, and continuous improvement.
- Identify risks, assess the effectiveness of control design and operation, and ensure that any control gaps are tracked, owned, and remediated within agreed timescales.
- Conduct reviews and challenge of departmental process level risk assessments.
- Support the Risk team in embedding reporting of risk events and maintenance of the risk register.
- Provide ongoing risk input and support for projects.
- Maintain awareness of key business activities and emerging risks, identifying areas where further second line of oversight / activity may be required.
- Preparing and delivering risk reports for internal stakeholders and regulatory bodies that meet regulatory expectations and internal standards.
- Manage the preparation of management information and regular reporting for committees, i.e., Executive Risk Committee and Board Risk Committee.
- Lead the delivery of risk-based monitoring reviews across a range of areas.
- Embed a methodology for ongoing monitoring reviews, including planning, testing, and reporting phases.
- Attend risk and governance committees as required.
- Maintain all systems-based records in an accurate and timely manner.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
